maybe the creepy whispering the losties were always hearing in the jungle are the whispers of the time traveling losties. what do you think? The preview has sawyer saying he saw Kate but obviously he wouldn't talk to her, right?  stating hidden from their past selves and people who might wonder what's going on?

There's a link around here of some that have been translated or audibly heard.

I still think they are all the dead souls.

I like this idea. But I like a few ideas...

Echoes of voices in space/time

Dead souls

Listening station interference

Im on board with the "echos in time" theory. Although the context of the dialog in the whispering denotes a linear discussions. May just be some Other/Jedi mind trick.

So, in the preview Sawyer says he saw Kate...I thought that meant that he saw them, the 06, back on the island? (Which could have been a flash into the future, then they flash back to the past...but they know that the 06 will be coming back?)

If you watch closely you will see a beam of light. This is the same beam of light from the Swan hatch door in the Season 1 finale. This time jump is when they first go into the hatch. I have a feeling that when Des makes a run for it(to his boat), he just might bump into Dan for more instructions.

my guess is they jump into the past (well, the future from where they are-1954) to when all the losties were on the island, and that's when he sees kate.

Don't the whispers say weird things like..."she, she's coming." and "It's him"

It always seems like the whispers know the person they are talking about. Unless they are taken totally out of context and mean nothing other than signaling the audience that something strange is gonna happen. I think the whispers are looking on to the misadventures of the island.

So do the characters on the show actually hear the whispers?  Or are the whispers more like the music?  for our benefit to make it more eerie and intense?  Do the characters ever reference the whispers? I don't recall...

It's very stressful being an Other.

They hear the whispers. They always look around when they hear them. As an example, last season Juliet and jack are in the woods and they run into Harper. She gives Juliet the message about stopping Daniel and Charlotte from going to the Tempest. Then they hear whispers and Jack and Juliet look around scared, and when they turn back to Harper, she's disappeared.

They would know themselves and their secrets, so it would make sense it was them talking about themselves.

When Sayid asked Danielle if she has seen the others, she says no, but she hears them.  They whisper.
