Something I just noticed on a quick scan over both episodes 1 & 2.

They are effectively book ended on either side by both Candle and Hawking responding to a question:

* What happens if the energy in wacky wheel room gets released ?
* What happens if Ben fails to get everyone back to the island ?

With the same answer: "God Help Us All".

It's not much but its interesting no?

Cool beans. Smiley  I didn't even notice it.  Nice catch.

Nice. At the beginning of one and the end of the other. Right? I have to watch them again.

Thinking the obvious...
I think it must have a doomsday impact on earth, not just who controls the island.

God help us all... this will be a great season.

I have been thinking that perhaps time (the future) can be changed if the O6 don't return to the island, but at a cost (per the mention of the "No Free Lunch" Theorem in Daniel's notebook. I am familiar with the machine learning version of the theorem, not so much with the economic theory version. From wikipedia: it is a way of describing opportunity cost (to get one thing you want, you must give up another thing you want). So, if the O6 don't get back to the island (preserve this timeline?), the future is drastically altered with no hope of correction. Perhaps Ben and "the powers that be" are working to preserve a timeline in which the island is kept hidden and secret, safe from the abuse of Widmore and others like him.

Perhaps with all the temporal jumps, the flow of time itself would be disrupted. Or even the surface of the earth. Think of an apple and poking it over and over with a pencil to represent the jumps. Eventually the surface of the apple will lose cohesion and you'll be left with a pock-marked mess with a relatively solid core. As the earth has a liquid core......

just a thought.....

For real. I'm sure they have it planeed out logically ENOUGH that later on, we'll all understand what this line that this guy said meant, and what the significance of that person being in that place was. It's just going to take some time. This is why I'm not hammering down any of my theories yet.

You guys are right, we don't know what the thing is to be helped from - the island is uber-powerful - if it's released, we all lose.  That's the broad stroke.  At this point it's like knowing that the Empire is bad in Star Wars.  We must stop them.  Why?  They're bad and powerful.  Why must the island be stopped?  It's too powerful.

But what it's doing to our characters -- that's what matters.
