There's another thread somewhere where somebody's said that the screencaps of Daniel Faraday's notebook from last season and the one from this episode are not the same, so they were wondering if there are two copies of the notebook.

Maybe that's what Ben's taking out of the vent -- the notebook.  It would likely contain things like coordinates and such, right?  And wasn't Ben on his way to see Mrs. Hawking right after that?  She might need the notebook.

I think this is another example of something I've been saying in countless other threads. Little things keep changing all over the place and I don't think that they are production errors. I think it's definitely on purpose and they are trying to tell us something with it.

Ben with a copy of Faraday's book and working with Faraday's mother is the stuff of great drama.  Excellent notion.

I think Ben is deffinitely hiding the box/book/whatever, just not from Jack. Neither of them reacted to Ben taking this thing out of the wall. I think that Ben is hiding it from someone else, more than likely Widmore. Could be Sayid (they apparently are on the outs with each other).

I assumed that the box had been placed there in advance of Ben's arrival, probably by Others.

I assumed that when Ben referred to "the rules" back when Keamy shot Alex, it had nothing to do with some Gentleman's Agreement about loved ones.  I figured it was something like the rules which kept Michael from dying before his preappointed martyrdom on the ship.  No gun could fire into him, no car wreck would kill him.  Dem's da rulez.
