This may have been talked about elsewhere, but I did not see a topic that stated this subject (I checked this time!!).

So let's look at this logically. Dan said that Desmond had to find his mother in Oxford. He went on to say "her name is-". Now because we didn't hear Dan give a name I think that it is no leap to say that we already know his mother. If we didn't, if she was a character we'd never met, then TPTB would have no problem having Dan say "her name is (insert goofy name here)".
Also she's doing math more complex than Chinese algebra. The only other character on the show that could help her with said equations? Daniel. Faraday is a name of Scottish origin, this would help to explain location (and Mrs. Hawking's accent), also interesting considering his numerous connections with Desmond.
My brother said it before the thought crossed my mind, but I dismissed it at first, but after consideration the idea holds water.

This one I agree with. I think she is Daniel's mother.

my only question is how does she get from oxford to la?

wait.  i think i have it.

the ISLAND time that we're looking at (well, minus the blips)is 3 years ago right?  yet the off island time we're looking at is now.  so.  3 years ago she was at oxford.  now she's in la meeting with ben.

I thought about her immediately, but I don't know if she's just too obvious of a choice! lol

I thought it was too for about a minute, but I don't think she's Dan's mom.

TPTB said she was sort of like a "time cop" (Season 3 dvd) so I wouldn't think she'd be allowed to interact to the point of having children.  I think she's trying to help Ben because in doing so, she's helping the universe course correct.

I'd have liked to have seen Dan finish his statement to Des saying..."her name is Emily Hanso..."

So just because she has a full time job she can't have children? Tongue

I think she is Dan's mum too Smiley

OK I will be in the minority here and say she is not Dans Mom.
1. Right now off the island is 3 years in the future for all of the losties, Desmond included.
2. Des is heading to Oxford to find Dans mom.
3. Mrs. Hawking is in LA/California talking to Ben.
4. She is probably older then Richard.

1.  CORRECT
2.  CORRECT
3.  CORRECT but when Daniel thinks his mom is at Oxford he thinks that it is 2004/2005 ish because that is when the shifts in time first occured.  But when Desmond wakes up with the DREAM/MEMORY he is in 2008.
4.. IDK where do you come up with this assumption.  I also dont think Richard is as old as most think.

I think Richard is ageless.  Or that his age is irrelevant.

Could be he's signed on with Loreal or Mary Kay?

So maybe Desmond goes to Oxford to find Daniel's mom, but finds out she's currently in LA, so he goes there.  Now he's back together with the rest of the O6, plus Ben and Sun, and all pieces are in place for them to go back to the Island together.

Why is it that Des only remembers meeting Faraday in 2008??

I understand that Des is special, and it seems that the law of time does not apply as it does to everyone else (the whole "time is a piece of string") but why is it that he remembers now and didnt always have this memory?

I guess wot im trying to say is that if Faraday is in 2004/05 (or previous) when he tells Des, and Des remembers it in 2008, does that mean that there is some kind of "anchor" in time, where if a change is made it is in Des' time?

I have probably just made no sense at all......Maybe Des' memory is just shot...

Gmonkey, I thought about that too - very weird and confusing.  I think the way to understand it is that Desmond's memory is based on his string of consciousness, or something.  It's like although that happened in 04/05, it did not enter his consciousness until 2008.

Jeff Jensen addresses it in his terrific recap on ew.com, but I can't really get the explanation to make full sense to me:

http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,1550612_20247060_20253904,00.html

He says "... I'm guessing Lost adheres to the controversial perspective that memory resides not in the physical structure of the brain, but in the electrical currents of consciousness."
