Abaddon didn't "recruit" Locke, he simply said, "You need to go on a walkabout." And Locke didn't even want to do it. There is still a part of Locke's personality that we have not been exposed to, and that is what happens that makes him become so determined to prove himself. Something happens between the physical therapy and the box factory that makes him so driven. I think that Abaddon deffinitely planted the seed of the walkabout in Locke's head, but he could just as easily gone on a rock climbing trip or something (I know he wouldn't actually be able to climb the rocks, but my point is that he didn't HAVE to go on the walkabout). So to say that Abaddon "recruited" him is a bit of a stretch.
