One of the biggest payoffs at the end of the series surely must be Desmond's & Penny's reunion.  You know TPTB are gonna milk that thing for every tear they possibly can.  As Laklost has observed, tho there's no chemistry between Kate & Jack, their relationship is a central pivot for the show.  However, Des & Penny, exist for us as the quintessential long-distance romance beset by intrigue, miscommunication and the malfeasance of foreign powers (ala Much Ado About Nothing).  They're the ones we long to see reunited.  Ergo, Des can't die in a huge C4 explosion on the freighter.

Of course, moments after they break from their embrace, they start arguing over what color to paint the flat, Des complains about stale scones, and Penny wonders how to convince Des that he ought to go get a haircut.

See the thing is is that there is an electronic circuit triggering all these big blocks of c4.   So shouldnt you be able to just pull the wires out of the c4 and your good

Then just through the c4 overbouard if you really want to be safe.

Desmond can die but I sure hope he doesn't. He and Penny's story is "quintessential." Have you ever read Jane Austen's Persuasion, it's a story of two lovebirds who hold on to the hope of one day eventually reuniting, and dealing with the emotional consequences that may be suffered during their time apart.

Wait wicki-clicky...

Serious parallels to Penelope, Widmore & Desmond

I just wonder where he will go....if the island moves, and Keamy is on the island will the signal be lost to the freighter and the bombs go boom....

He got in touch with Penny when he was on the freighter (via Minkowski). He wants to stay on the freighter because that is his best chances at being reunited.

I'm pretty sure they'll have some sort of device hooked up to the C4 that will set it off if the wiring is disconnected, or else the whole thing is pointless.

I just wonder where he will go....if the island moves, and Keamy is on the island will the signal be lost to the freighter and the bombs go boom....
perhaps the freighter blows up before it even gets there which would mean the chopper never made it to the island, the survivors never meet Naomi or Faraday or Lapidus or Charlotte, Locke never sees the heights of Ben's duplicity and Ben and Widmore never have their future war...or perhaps have one for other reasons.....

I just created a paradox  Undecided because in order for the freighter to blow up before getting there it had to have been there to force the move of the island by events that already took place - however, if the freighter never got there, then the events couldn't have taken place and therefore the island shouldn't have had to be moved.....

Why?? Des is his constant, but that does not mean he ever used him as his constant. Plus just because you used the constant, that does not mean you die if they die. Penny was there for Des when she had to be.

We have seen Desmond be noble and sacrifice himself (ie: turning the key not knowing what would happen)....he could say goodbye to Penny again while trying to save everyone on the freighter.....he could slip through time again not knowing he can do that since he already became unstuck accidentally perhaps he can do it willingly...possibly like Richard Alpert......
