the jesus statuette hurley was holding looked almost exactly the same as a large statue in the background at the funeral for jack's dad.

Standard C-130 crew is 5 unless it's a J model which 1717 isn't.

Pilot, Copilot, Navigator, Flight Engineer, & Loadmaster.  When there are passengers in the cargo compartment, there has to be a loadmaster present.  That's probably who that is.
