Didn't anybody find it odd that the two scientists, Daniel and Charlotte, would question the island's power supply?
Daniel: Where do you suppose all this power is coming from? Charlotte: Add that one to the list, Dan.
I've never questioned why the island has a power supply... There could be water turbines under the sea; solar panels and windmills on top of it's hills; it could be generating electricity via subterannean heat.
Are we to assume that Daniel and Charlotte have already investigated the possibility of renewable energy sources and discounted all the obvious answers?
Is this foreshadowing that the power is going to be turned off in a future episode? Is it another example of "magic" versus science? Is the island really a huge machine - a huge ship of sorts?
Why would Daniel even pass comment on the island's power supply, if he wasn't genuinely baffled by it?

They rarely mention something like that and it not be foreshadowing something...
Perchance we'll get to see one of them wave generating power things like they've got in the Isles...
That, wind or Smokey's got some 220 plugs and maybe a few USB 2 and/or Firewire ports....

The reference was either a shoutout to the fans, who have often ridiculed the show for not giving answers to basic questions ("How do they get power on the island") or it is indeed a foreshadowing of events to come, possibly a complete power shutdown or power surge which cripples what's left of the communications or power supply.

There have been numerous comments about the power supply. Ben says it's hamsters, if I recall. We'll eventually find out.

If scientists find the power supply inexplicable then it's safe to assume that the energy source isn't "conventional"...

IMHO Just because they question what the power source is does not mean the it is inexplicable or non-conventional. It just means they don't know what it is and have not seen any evidence of it so are wondering.................... Just like we are.

There is underground cabling, but as the map detailing the cables relates to The Flame (which was a communications station), I'm guessing that these were telecommunication cables. http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/DHARMA_cabling_mapThe Lostpedia page I've linked to, states it's been alleged that The Tempest generates electricity. Who alleged this? I really can't recall.

If you look closely (or follow Mango's links and look at it AT lostpedia) you can clearly see "lights" in one of the boxes and less than clearly see something that says "power" in the Barracks key.

Isn't that the map for the FLAME station? That's communications and not the power station as assumed by the Tempest.

Yeah, The Flame would have had a power supply (as have all the stations) and may have remotely controlled the lighting at the barracks, but it wasn't the actual source of energy. It appears that only Juliet has stated that The Tempest is a power station. Here's part of the transcript for 'The Other Woman' at Lostpedia. JULIET: Faraday and Charlotte are heading for the Tempest.
JACK: The Tempest?
JULIET: It's safer for you if I don't talk about it.
JACK: No. Talk about it, please.
JULIET: It's an electrical station that powers the Island.
JACK: Why would they go there?
(Jack stops Juliet.)
JACK: Hey. If there's something you need to tell me, now's the time to do it.
JULIET: What I need is for you to help me. Will you help me?
(Jack resignedly looks to the ground.)
JULIET: If we move all night, maybe we can still catch them. Thank you. It still doesn't really explain how The Tempest creates its electricity.

Well, it was hinted at in Season 2 that there might be a geothermal generator of sorts underneath the Swan station, might help to explain where it all comes from.
