Because they didn't have smoke detectors as part of a building code back in the early 80s?

I don't think they found it necessary... I mean it's not like they had a fire department.

Some people have said they thought the low battery beep sounded like the Swan beep at 4 minutes.
I don't.

I do. I am an Amish pyro witch. I can't believe I just typed that! Neither can I. Cheney and the CIA are probably tracking you on the intraweb now, as we speak. You may officially be declared a terrorist by days end.

It simply added to the suspense, tension, & drama of the scene.
I still disagree. It was simply a plot to get Jack out of his office so he could see Christian. I didn't feel tense at all, just annoyed at the stupid beep. I hate it when my smoke alarm battery dies, so it brought back some not-so-fond memories for me. i agree. beep not important, just a way to get jack out of his office.

If anything it reminded me of the Swan station 'beeping' sound that eminated from the computer informing the Losties that the timer was running.
yup, me too. seems to me that the smoke alarm beeping was sped up for purposes of the show from what it would have been in real life (so that it beeped a few times in the scene rather than once every 45 seconds or whatever it would have done in real life). when they sped it up, they made it very near in tempo to the beeps of the original hatches countdown timer....
