The man can shoot a gun, he can do morse code off the top of his head, and can provide basic medical needs.  Who needs Jack or Locke?

It just goes to prove you don't have to be young and studly to be a hero.

The only thing the dentist doesn't know is how to take care of his own teeth!

Sadly, I had forgotten he was a dentist in the real world.  Thanks for the reminder... that explains the ability to at least give shots and understand about chloroform.  As for the others, I was thinking military as well, but I couldn't recall them ever revealing that aspect of his background.

He's the right age for Viet Nam.  We still had the draft back then.  He probably served.

I think the knowing how to shoot thing and the morse code thing really helps to fill his character out.  Without it, he kinda comes across as a wimp.

I was thinking scoutmaster. He just seems the type to give to the community that way. And it would help explain the Morse and the shooting skills.

Well, please get him to decode the exact wording of the Morse code in the last episode.

He's a dentist and he was in the military as a young man.  Dentist's go to med school, old school army dudes used to have to learn Morse code as part of their training.  My Dad knew all the Morse code because he was taught it in the Korean War back in the 40's.
