Pandas?

i know that pandas are signifigant in asian culture. but is there any signifigance for newborns or thier mothers.

I just assumed it was yet another allusion to the black/white metaphor that's been going on through Lost since season 1. (the backgammon pieces that Locke held up to Walt, the two stones Jack found on Adam and Even in the cave...)

Good call.  We've seen that black & white theme since s1e1.

I agree.
I agree too. Jin was ordered by Paik to court the Chinese ambassador in order to gain business within China. It is a common practice to gift ambassadors in order to gain concessions and compliance.

Quite right. This is why it had to be a panda. The fact that he was so stressed out about it is Paik's doing.
