Yeah, he was actually in this episode right before Jack and Juliette go looking for Daniel and Charlotte.  It was just for a split second, but he was there.  It was right when it starts raining, I remember seeing him with one of the Losties on the beach... I think they go looking for Daniel and Charlotte to with Vincent in tow. If I remember correctly he's near the bottom left part of the screen.

I don't know why more people aren't talking about this, but... what the hell was the whole "gas purge" all about?  So Ben was going to purge the whole island this time via the Tempest station?  Wouldn't that kill Ben too, not to mention his precious group, the Others?  Also, how the hell did Daniel and Charlotte even know that he was planning on gassing the whole island?  They seemed to know the exact time that this was going to happen too, based on the fact that they get there and only have minutes to deactivate the countdown.  Although, I must admit, I was extremely happy to find out that Daniel really is a good guy (for now)... I couldn't give a crap about Charlotte tho honestly, I was actually hoping that Juliette was going to shoot her.
Now, I haven't had the chance to rewatch the episode yet, so I may have missed some information about that whole incident. So if you saw or heard something I didn't, let me know.  Still... it seemed extremely odd to me, even for Ben.
The gassing was only a "doomsday scenario" put in place by Ben to activate in the event that there was to be a new "incident" or jeopardy to the island in some way.  IMO, to your point though, the scene was poorly explained and executed.  You also have to consider the fact that what you saw was not necessarily what was actually 'supposed' to happen, i.e., that Daniel and Charolotte's intentions were good and that Ben was right all along.  They could have actually been going to gas the whole island (which is why they were wearing gas masks in the first place!), and kill "every living thing on the island".  When they were discovered and had a gun to their heads, they changed course (for now) and disabled the gas.

According to the recording that was playing while Dan worked on the computer, the countdown started when the computer detected an unauthorized attempt at manual override.  I believe Dan and Charlotte were doing exactly what they said, disabling the gas, but that they were doing it to clear the way for a takeover, not to protect the Losties in any way.

I would be wearing a full-on end of the world gas suit that would protect me from any gas that may escape while trying to render the gas inhert. D & C were there to disable the Tempest to be used as a last resort defense system for Ben to protect the island. D & C didn't change their minds from release to disable once Juliet arrived to stop them. Their plan from the get-go since arriving on the island was to follow the set course of plans(what ever those may be) given to them from "whom ever"(Widmore).

I don't think it's completely clear yet and just pure speculation on either side of the argument until we know more.  That's what makes this show so interesting and aggravating both at the same time.

I wonder if this is what Ben meant by "every living human being will die". If the Island gets invaded, Ben'll kill everyone by releasing the gas.

Just a stray thought.

Sounds plausible. Maybe "The Temple" is a "safe house" for the others. Ben releases gas killing those who are not at the Temple.

Maybe, but Ben wouldn't hesitate to sacrifice his people. He might hesitate for himself or for Alex, but not for most of his peeps. We saw him sacrifice the Bond babes in the Looking Glass.

I'm on board with that stray thought.  We heard him say this line at first and thought, "Wow!  What's coming that is going to kill everyone?"  I feel like every week this season we have had further and further confirmation that we don't need another bad guy besides Ben.  He is so powerful and intelligent and well-backed that I'm feeling like he can do whatever the heck he wants.

I have to say, I nearly shat myself when I saw the words "...in essence, the Purge Part 2" pop-up at the bottom of the screen for the replay of "The Other Woman".  At least I got that part right, lol

I don't know if anybody still reads these older posts, but the enhanced version of "THE OTHER WOMAN" had a pop up that said "Ben used the tempest to carry out the first purge" It didn't say he filled canisters with gas from the tempest. It said he used the tempest.

Great point.  I just happened to watch Purge #1 in "Man Behind the Curtain" last evening.  Ben's can was to kill his dad at close range (psychopathic maniac...).  The Others waltzed into camp - no cans.  Hmmm....wonder who was working in the Tempest then.
