Hi, I've lurked for a couple years, but finally think I have something to share...
I think it might be possible that Minkowski's death, or at least how he died due to the brain aneurysm/collapse, may have been the exact ailment that Rousseau refers to as "the sickness". I remember on an old podcast it was said that the sickness makes people "go crazy". Perhaps Rousseau's crew, a science expedition, was subjected to radiation in some form or another on their voyage, then received the affects of the sickness once they crashed. Rousseau would have been extra careful not to receive large amounts of radiation because she was seven months pregnant at the time.
So if this theory is correct it explains why no other survivors have contracted the sickness (I guess they were all radiation free). Also, it shows that these brain anomalies can happen both ways. If you're irradiated and go to the island you will receive the affects on the island, and if you get irradiated on the island (like Desmond), and leave you will get the affects.
this is absolutely awesome! way to go Roger!!
So, basically as long as our losties stay on the island they will be okay, but when/if they get off the island there could be major problems for them. who could qulify that we know of for excessive radiation/em?
Rose~ if she had any form of radiation therapy for her cancer Bernard~ as a dentist he was around x-ray machines all day Jack~ at the hospitial daily, he would have been exposed. Juliet~ how much has she been exposed as a fertility doctor? anyone else??Lets not forget Hurley, for all the time spent infront of the microwave waiting for his burritos.

For whatever reason I keep thinking that Minkowski is the so imaginary friend that Hurley had when he was with libby and he started freaking out and how he almost jumped, then Libby kissed him to keep him stable..You remember that eposide, when the guy was in the pjams..He looks soo darn familiar

As has been said in some other topics - Danielle was pregant. Maybe she kept away from more of the radiation than whatever her crew may have been exposed to.

The people on the boat knew he was going loopy, the people on the island had no idea. So why would Frank say not to put Minkowski on speakerphone? I realize they are supersecretive, but what importance did Minkowski have, if he was basically the ship operator? It was like when they called the boat, he was who they ultimately needed to talk to. Almost like he was the man in charge. But he wasn't.
The real question is, why did the "boat people" (whoever the authority on that boat is, we have yet to see), let Minkowski and 'Brandon' travel to the island in a separate boat, get close to the island, and then as a result get the time travel nosebleed effects from it? If Minkowski was 'one of them' and the communications officer, why would they let him risk the mission like that, and for what purpose? Another question, if Naomi couldn't 'see' the island on her chopper, how was it that Minkowski and Brandon could and knew where it was to go try to "see the island" as Minkowski related back to Desmond.

Naomi probably couldn't see the island because the "bubble" was obscuring her view. As far as Minkowski being allowed to leave - I thought he'd made it pretty clear that they had snuck the tender away.

They would have experienced some form of radiation. This was shown when the key around Jack's neck pulls towards the concrete walls.

This was answered in the episode The Constant:
DESMOND: Hey, how did this happen to you?
MINKOWSKI: We were anchored here. Waiting for our orders. Bored out of our minds. Me and Brandon...he's one of the crew members....we took off the ship's tender. We just wanted to see the island. But Brandon started acting crazy...so we had to turn around.
DESMOND: Where is he?
MINKOWSKI: In a body bag.

You know that's a really long way to go in that little tender. For some reason I think maybe they had some other purpose we don't know about, like maybe dropping some people off that we haven't met yet.

Well, Minkowski seems to have been a pretty straightforward person and he doesn't have to tell Des anything. So I think he's just told us the truth. His buddy probably died of Reginitis, not Desmonditis.

but the island seems visible from the freighter. What the REAL problem appears to me is how to reach it passing by the time distortion field. Lapidus could do that because he flight to a point where he could do a straight line to a defined location, that Naomi provided, as last act. Minkowsky didn't had this precise target, guided by instruments.

I think going to the island is not the problem, but coming back from it IS. Notice that all the time travelers are on the freighter, none on the island. Des only got it by going to the boat. Daniel probably is worried that he will get it on the way back, which is why he wrote in his book.

Minkowski stated as they got closer to the island Brandon started acting crazy. Was it actually stated when he started his time travelling? If he did I can't recall
