I'd wager that the 6 are folks who were presented to the world as a group. That doesn't preclude other folks who make it off.

Picture the media frenzy, though. It was the media/the populace who "named" them the Oceanic Six, of course -- not the six themselves. Picture group photos and papparazi shots -- six people rescued from that island. The shorthand of "Oceanic Six" doesn't have to specifically be people who got there via the plane. It's merely a shortcut way to refer to them that the media probably used first.
And so, in any group shot, Aaron would be a person just like any of the others. The only thing different about him is that another of the six would have to hold him up.

I thought Aaron and Claire were 5 & 6 but now that Kate has custody of Aaron maybe Claire isn't #6. HMM. |

I would not count him, yet either. I think that maybe his name was not used because he is a minor and in order for you to release a minors name in something like that is a legal guardian. Well we know that Claire doesnt get off with them so she could have not allowed. He was not mentioned to the media as one of the six.
