Just my two cents - Okay I get that maybe oceanic owed them a huge debt for crashing their plane and stranding them on an obscure island for so long, but why help them now?

They got "gold" passes - seems fitting.  But why would a lawyer for Oceanic be concerned that Hurley's in a mental hospital?  It seriously would not be their problem anymore.  They maybe forked over some money, gold passes for all, and would usually wash their hands of the whole mess.  No, they wouldn't keep tabs on them and be concerned about the Oceanic 6's continuing mental state.  Obviously, he probably wasn't from Oceanic, but even if he was, or whoever he was with, they want some answers from our Rescued.

But are we really supposed to believe that the airline is still concerned with them?  Highly doubtful.

The gold passes were a bribe.  I knew of a guy who caught a mishap videotape while at a Disney resort and they bribed him with gold passes in exchange for the tape.

The "deal" that was cut with the 6 rescuees is probably one of silence.  Oceanic probably already told the world that the plane was found in the ocean with everyone dead.  The 6 are probably under orders not to tell anyone the truth.

Big Mike certainly sounded like he had no knowledge of the plight of the survivors.  He made it sound like he was told that AnaLucia died in the crash.

But in the first flash-forward, Jack appeared to have resumed his life, didn't he?  Weren't there references to his father? and they're using their real names?

But yeah, it does make sense that it's a bribe, didn't think of that.  But bribe them to do what?  (ahh - the mysteries of Lost....)   Wink

maybe not so much as a bribe as restitution.  maybe it was found that the crash was caused by something defective with the plane, or the pilot.  (although we know this isn't really true)  so oceanic stepped foreward to make restitution with the survivors.  maybe the "them" that are keeping the survivors quiet are not oceanic, but dharma/widmore/THEM.

Yeah, restitution is a better word.  However, I'm sure that Oceanic is in cahoots with the Sinister Corporation.

He most likely is part of the freighter people who were sent there trying to takeover the island it seems.

Or is part of Hanso/widmore.  And trying to see if there is anyone else left on this island.

i have to add though, that i don't think THEM are really keeping them quiet, but fear of what THEY will do to the losties still on the island is what's keeping them quiet

I think Oceanic Airlines didn't want the bad publicity. I mean their plane crashes and they can't even find the survivors for who knows how long.

I don't think they got more than the golden ticket. I think that lawyer worked for Hanso/Widmore/Others...

I don't think the "attorney" was actually with Oceanic Airlines.  He just said that because he thought that Hurley might believe it.  If he could get Hurley to agree to leave, then they could take him, run some expirements and interrogate him without anyone knowing.  That is why he didn't have a business card, he wasn't who he said he was.

That was my take on the scene, did I over-analyze this?

Hmmm... The lawyer who visited Hurley wasn't from Oceanic. He took a powder as soon as Hurley got suspicious about that.

Oceanic's got to be into this pretty deep. They've claimed evidence that there were no survivors so the six must be agreeing to tell some story that explains how they survived and apparently to claim they're the only ones who did.

What's not clear is what they're holding over the 6 to keep them from telling their tale. Or why even 6 were allowed to return and resume normal lives.

I'm trying to figure out how Cindy fits into this too...

She was employed by Oceanic.  From last years TLE, we found out that she was Gary Troup's girlfriend.  Gary Troup (turbine man) had authored a book that Hanso wanted silenced, & he also implicated Widmore in shady/ unethical business practices.  So was she taken & brainwashed by the Others or was she a plant that joined them when she had the chance?

Taken and brainwashed. Nothing like a visit or two to room 23 to soap down your noodle.
