Jacob / God is hidden only to those that don't believe or have faith. Locke sees him bc he in fact is a man of faith.

I was under the impression that Jacob was appearing to be Christian for Locke's benefit who was in the cabin with him, Hurley just happened to peep inside as Locke and Jacob/Christian were communicating, hence Locke startling Hurley.
Maybe Jacob was appearing as Christian and Locke for Hurley's benefit?
Only confusing aspect was where is this in the time-line, I think its present just after Jack radio's the boat isnt it?

A couple of things...
Just because we equate Jacob with Gods doesn't mean he can't get angry. A very common theme in every mythology and even some modern religions. Don't interpret God to our Christian God as a benevolent and kind god, think more along the lines of the Titans from Greek culture.
Smokey has been there since the dawn of time and essentially has Jacob captive (just like Mittlework had Hanso in TLE). For what ever reeason they cannot destroy each other directly but have to rely on influencing humans to do their bidding, again very common in mythologies. So both sides continue to bring people to the island in an attempt to get them to d their dirty work.
But here is the rub, there is no good side or bad side. Neither side can win since their war is Armageddon. Which in ancient times meant 'the plains of gathering' where armies will gather, in the end of times, for 'the war that ends all wars'.
So whether you picked Jack or Locke doesn't matter, what matters is that neither side get the upper hand and accomplish the goal of their particular puppet master.
