I know. You're using my name as an explicative.
Continuing on the Valenzetti stuff, though, in the Foundation Series a mathematician discovers that equations that predict the course of human history have been tweaked. In fact, they have been tweaked by a whole other society living on a separate planet.
Tweaking Valenzetti, I believe, is the hope of all those trying to invade the island. Of course, the groups have different aims....and we don't even yet know the intent of the others. But, somehow, the abilities of the island can be used to tweak realities and the course of history.
In this fashion, the writers are again borrowing from a great piece of literature and devising a broad platform for their storytelling. Only in season five shall we understand the why of all of this, but in the end I think that you will have groups that are trying to bend history towards their own ends, mulitple realities with "the island" determining the one most stable (and thus destiny), and the losties each finding redemption and their true selves. Blah....

Your name isn't an explicative - it's code for "thoughts higher than most of us can keep up with!" I follow what is up with Valenzetti's equation - and I really appreciate you placing it back with Asimov. It's the "tweaking" bit I want to get hold of. Am I to understand that the incident was Dharma trying to do some well-intentioned tweaking (somehow involved with the virus) that went wrong? What are they doing on a 9-5 basis to tweak Valenzetti? Spying on each other? Teaching students about volcanoes? Delivering beer? Pushing the button on the computer? I want to know when Dharma stopped - are they completely gone? Or are they coming back on the boat? Or is the boat a Sinister Corporation (referred to as that by someone else) wanting in on Dharma's work?

It's my belief that the Others represent the spiritual side of this battle. They are protecting the island to prevent men of science from messing with the numbers. They want destiny/prophesy to play out in its natural course and conclude with the end of days foretold in Revelation. Then and only then will the decent souls of the world be saved. This is why Ben sees himself and the Others as the truly good guys. And this may be the 'revelation' that comes to Hurley and Jack sometime after the rescue when it is too late.

Now that delineation makes sense to me. Especially why Ben has let all Dharma's stuff go to pot. So, did Ben change the Orientation films? Is Ben in cahoots with Mittelwerk? Is Mittelwerk gone? Is this Alvar's people on the boat? Why does Ben say everyone is going to die? Why would he think Dharma is going to kill him - just out of retribution? Or is something they are intending to do going to go against his destiny/prophesy angle?

I think the 'rescuers' are in the 'men of science' group and are looking to re-take the island from the Others to continue experimenting with the numbers. Of course Ben would have to assume that anyone who knows what happened in the purge isn't going to be too cordial to him and the Others. Our Losties are caught in the middle and would be considered 'collateral damage'. A major plot of the story this season is going to be how they managed to convince the freighters to let them leave with everything they know. Just my guess.

I think that Dharma incidentally stumbled onto an island that had some interesting scientific qualities not knowing that this island was the keystone in a battle between two forces. That is why the natives didn't kill Dharma immediately nor cohabitate with them.
The others hang around this island because they are supposed to protect something. There are a lot more others than we have seen. Somehow, their spiritual link to the island is not as great as it once was and therefore Ben, relying upon some mysterious prophetic Jacob, was able to emerge as a leader. The spiritual link also explains the other's facination with Locke.
In any event, the spiritual connection to the island is the window by which we will see the special powers of the island....the magic box and etc....play out. These guys will travel somewhere and do some wierd ceremony and something will happen that will freak us out and then we will sit around and wish that we had one of those.

My thinking is pretty much in line with lf777.
Puff- I think that Dharma chose the Island for its specific properties, but underestimated the variables associated with them.

Temple, anyone? I hope we get there sometime this season, but I have a feeling alot of our questions are going to be answered there, so we may not see it until much later, especially with our new freighter friends in the mix.

Do you think that the temple & the 4-toed statue represent the same people group/ civilization?

Do you think that the temple & the 4-toed statue represent the same people group/ civilization? The statue may be a remnant of an ancient civilization that once inhabited the island. Maybe they discovered it or crashed on it and settled for a while. Or maybe they were brought there to take over the job of protecting it. Maybe it's our Lostie's turn to take a shift. I also think Aaron is going to be a large part of the final story. Maybe Aaron is who they are really waiting for, they just don't know it yet. They are definitely preoccupied with babies. Is there a prophesy they are waiting to be fulfilled?

The reason I ask is that it seems the writers are indicating Richard's "Others" are the indigenous people, but the 4-toed statue represents another group that came later. Did anyone else get that sense from last week's re-cap?

Sinister Corporation (referred to as that by someone else) I demand that everyone use this patented term! Thoughts: - There is a connection between the notion that folks who die on The Island appear later in a tangible form AND the notion that babies/mommas who conceive on The Island die every time. These folks belong to The Island. - When DHARMA was working on changing the numbers, they were working against The Island. When Ben started trying to undo the birth problem, he was working against The Island. - The Sinister Corporation© that funds the boat/Paik/DHARMA/Hanso/Widmore, etc represents the Men of Science who are working against The Island. Jack will find himself (and his group) in that position as well.

I'll never forget that, & it was awesome to hear even the Producers use YOUR term in the s3 DVD bonus features.

Since Desmond has been able to see into the future. I wonder if this is all in Desmond's head? XDD Just kiddng.
Well if Hurley's power is to see dead people. What the fudge is Jack's power? The ability to drink too much!! BWAHAHAH.
