I think the Island is making him see Charlie. Hurley said ".....it [meaning the island] will do whatever it needs to get us back...."
He will keep seeing Charlie until they go back....
Ditto. Also- just because the other guy saw Charlie doesn't mean that he HAS to be alive. He can be "mostly dead" lol & still be seen by more than just Hurley. There have been other "appearances" (manifestations of Island communication?) that have been visible to more than one person.

Ditto...ditto on his possible ability too.
I agree with JMart too. It makes total sense that the guy telling him Charlie was there (was that the same one who told him the "oceanic" lawyer was there too?) was part of his imagination. Dave is a perfect example of this, he was very real to Charlie. Just as real as Charlie slapping him.

Seeing Hurley go back to the insane asylum was really difficult for me to watch especially after that whole 'I want to be free + cannonball scene'.
I had to ask myself several times over, is Charlie really back (after they milked his death/drowning scene for the umpteenth time) or is he another figment of Hurley's imagination (like Dave)? And if Charlie is one of the islands tricks/illusions, what makes him different from Christian or Yemmi? The weird thing is that Charlie is our first supposed apparition off the island (or not, as some may argue).
Regardless, the island has a mysterious way of bringing back the dead, or at least those we assume to be dead. But when Charlie slapped Hurley, was that a true physical manifestation? C'mon, Charlie says, "I am dead, but I'm here." What's that supposed to mean? Are we, the viewers, the ones being slapped in the face with something so simple and obvious?
I'm still on the fence with this one, still confused and it goes way back to one of the islands oldest mysteries... the whole, am I seeing a ghost or is that person I thought was dead really waliking around?

I had to pause the tivo and argue this one out with Mr Waves as well, I want to believe that Charlie is alive. but I'm sticking with the whole "my spirit is with you" motif. the island(/Jacob) needs them for something. I just didn't realize how far His "Crazy dead people vision" range spread
for hurley it spans far and wide.

I've always thought the answers to this whole story will be based in religion and faith as opposed to just having a scientific explanation. With that in mind, I think Charlie IS dead and his SPIRIT appeared to Hurley to tell him that "they need you". Obviously someone or something needs them to return to the island because "they have work to do".
Some of us are going to believe that Charlie actually appeared and some will think that Hurley is just delusional with grief because we are all either "men of science" or men of faith" (or women, of course).

Dude, Charlie is totally dead. Hurley is seeing some type of manifestation. He can either open the door and allow himself to see such visions or keep the door closed and not sound like a complete crazy.

RE: "Charlie was not a spirit. That is why he slapped Hurley - to show that his body was solid and real."
I'm pretty sure there was significant physical contact between charlie and dave as well. It sucks, but Charlie is dead. He's just a figment of hurleys cracked up brain.
Think about it: Hurley was a little nuts before the island, and even while he's on it. Dave was all in his head - manifesting some part of Hugo that he did not want to see. When he finally "defeats" dave, he is free, and generally better off... maybe even "cured" ? Then, off island, he is so overwhelmed by his survivor guilt or the big secret that the O6 are keeping, but he knows that he has to do the right thing: go back to the island. Charlie sacrificed himself while trying to save his friends, and hence makes the perfect person to embody Hurley's new imaginary friend, again bringing news to Hugo that he doesn't want to hear.

I agree Beanblog! I think Dave even slapped Hurley. It was his way of "proving" to the big guy that he was really there.
Hurley has a history of bad reactions to guilt. That's why he was in the Institution to begin with. Now he's feeling guilty again so back to an imaginary friend. The big difference is that Charlie is a positive influence. He wants Hurley to face up to the guilt and do something about it. Dave was a negative influence - "keep eating, dude". Dave was welcome, told Hurley what he wanted to hear. Charlie is not welcome, tells Hurley what he needs to hear, but doesn't wanna. Hence the running away.
It is troubling that someone else apparently saw Charlie, but hey, that guy's in a mental institution for a reason. He may not have seen anything, he may have seen someone else. No telling.

confirmation: episode 2x18 "Dave" [We see Hurley in bed sleeping. Dave enters.] DAVE: Psst. Hey, wake up, dude. Finally, you could sleep though a damn Nascar race, man. HURLEY: Wait, you're not -- you're a hallucination. [Dave slaps him] Ow. DAVE: Was that a hallucination? HURLEY: Maybe I just imagined you slapped me? [Dave slaps him again] Ow! Damn it. DAVE: We can do this all night.
So yes, Hurley's visions can touch him

I have been assuming the orderly was real and hence Mr. ABADDON was real too..I need to rewatch but thought the guy who saw Charlie was the same one playing connect four with him when Mr. Abbandon showed up.
