Did The Monster Appear After The Holocaust?

It strikes me that we witnessed no reference to the monsta in the flashbacks.  Yes the sonic fences kept out the wildlife and the natives.... But, if anybody had ever heard of the monster, then they wouldn't be driving around in little VW buses.

Additionally, Juliet said that her people didn't know much about the monster.  The Dharma people would have also certainly studied it if it had been around. 

So, WHEN DID THE MONSTER COME ON THE SCENE?

My guess is that the monster represents the souls who have died upon the island and it became a good deal stronger and angrier as the result of Ben's actions.

I agree that there is still much left to be answered about the monster. I thought that on the recap show, TPTB were really saying that the manifestations of Christian, Yemi, etc. were in fact part of the monster. If that were the case, wouldn't Ben's vision of his mom on the island (when he ran out to the fence the first time, his mom on the other side of the fence) be pre-purge?

And, I don't believe anything Juliet says. She has lied more than anyone on the show I think! No reason to believe she would have been telling the truth about that, especially since it backed off from her when she and Kate were standing by the fence.

Smokey is the alter ego of Jacob!! 

He is what was left after Ben trapped the good side of the monster in the cabin and named him Jacob. 

Just a theory of mine.
