1, i may be wrong here, but im thinking the hatch a some kind of teleporter.
you only ever see people come out of the sub. i think they are teleported to the hatch, then taken to the island by the sub.
this would explain juliet being drugged first.

2, maybe the reason charlie didnt die is because they went a day earlier than planed because the others are coming,
OR
des only said you press the button then drown, and charlie hasnt pressed it yet.
maybe when he does it courses the hatch to self destruct trapping charlie.

1? Ooooft! Please let that be an oar someone has just struck my head with.

2? Good point about the day early idea. This episode was much hyped as Charlie's send off (even last week's podcast had Dom Monighaninananahannihan rambling on about not wanting to be typecast  when he leaves etc) It seemed too obviously un-Lost to actually kill the guy in in his death episode.

Ok, great, we've finally found the real underwater hatch.
This finding overshadowed the real fact why Desmond went along with Charlie.
I'm almost certian if Charlie didn't knock Desmond unconcious that second, Desmond would of surely done the same thing after their touching convosation. But sad emotions aside;
I'm pretty sure Desmond has met these people before, within the Looking Glass, OR he knows how to handle them. I'm sure when the 'What did one snowman say to the other?' joke crops up Charlie will go "HUH?!?!" and when he wakes up from a bat across the face (thats Karma) he'll be tied up.
Are these the only Dharma folk left on the island, and believe Charlie is a hostile?

I'm absolutely convinced that there is an underwater hatch. I don't mind being proven wrong. I would be surprised if it wasn't the case but nonetheless, I think there is definitely an underwater hatch!

There!

I've said it!

Didnt the blueprints say something like hatch located at 70 meteres down?

70 m x 3 ft per meter = 210 ft?

Some deep dive isnt it?

Hence the weight belt.  ;D

I have scuba dived down to about 75 feet. A lot of pressure at that distance alone.

70 meters = 229 feet - 8"
The world record for free dving (no gear except fins) is 122 meters  held by a professional

The world record for the type of dive closest to what we saw Charlie do (no gear, no fins, only ballast) is 87 meters.

Once again, unless Charlie is secretly Auqaman, he has escaped what would seem to be a deadly undertaking by what - shear dumb luck, magic box lungs, ?

Well was it a guess or what? Was I smokin' crack when I watched Des holding the cable and that long look into the water...I could see what I thought was the top of the submerged hatch?!?!?

You probably did.  The water in the pacific is very clear you can see down quite a ways.
It was  just farther than you thought.
