Wow I just saw that picture of Alvar.  Does look a lot like Jacob, even has the brown eyes.
Lostpedia:

Now I don't know what kind of EXACT technology Ben was referring too, but I'd guess the more modern sort.  Jacob does have a stove, after all.  It could make sense that Jacob is Magus.  During the 1800's Magnus would not have had the opportunity to encounter the electronics we have now a days.  Once he crashed on the island and came in contact with the electromagnetic pulses, his true power was realized and Jacob was the form that resulted.

I watched that scene again last night in slo-mo, and it's clear that Ben's face changes to immediate alarm right when Locke turns the flashlight on.  It's as if "Oh crap!  Now it's hit the fan!"  and it's because of the flashlight being turned on.

Also, I'm probably missing something but it looked to me like only one chair in the room.  And the black spot on the chair doesn't seem to me to be the shadow that you see in the center of a flashlight beam, like some people have said.  There's another scene of the flashlight beam against a wall, and I didn't see a shadow-center in it.  It was only when it was on the chair, which makes me think that black-spot was the beginning of a Smokie manifestation.

Okay another thought.
Along the lines of Jacob is the good or evil or the positive or negative.

What if he is a smokie and the other smokie is free still.  Like he is the good smokie and the other is the bad smokie??  or vice-versa.

Ying-Yang kinda thing.

Jacob and Smokie are two very powerful, very unexplained aspects of the island.  I see smokie as being a man made technologically advanced being, where as I believe Jacob is a real, life-made entity.

Jacob must have some malicious power in him though, or else he wouldn't me locked up.  And how long ago was that, anyways?  Did Ben lock him up?  I don't think Ben has enough power to do that alone, but no one else has seen Jacob.  Was Jacob trapped long before Dharma strolled in?  Or did Jacob trap himself?  I like that one... maybe he abused his power and hurt people, like say Carrie, and put himself away to end the damage.  But now he's sick of it.  Eh.  Okay it doesn't really fit...  Gosh I just don't know!

I agree with the "I don't know" part.  Wink

I personally have no theories on Smokey. Too advanced for me to figure out. If I were TPTB, I probably wouldn't have had a Smokey.

But without Smokey, I don't see how Christian could be alive....
