Maybe Jacob is the island/nature personified while technology/Dharma/civilization is the antithesis of nature.

Ben told Locke that Jacob hates technology because Jacob hates technology. He is in tune with the island.

I read this theory at www.4815162342.com.  I'll try to sum it up here.
They said that many "ghost chasers" who use electronic equipment to track ghosts find that there are problems.  Often, machines go out of whack, full batteries will drain, etc.  The theory is that the supernatural powers are channeling the electronic power for their benefit.  So then Ben wouldn't want technology used around Jacob because Jacob could use that power.  Notice Jacob didn't start his mischief until after the flashlight was used.  He could have used that energy, provoking his tantrum.

This could also be related to the "incident."  Maybe Dharma realized that this Jacob figure could wreak havoc if the magnet wasn't kept in check, so they set up the Swan station to let the charge out in a brief and controlled manor.

Is it just me or is Lost getting silly?  Ben has mommy and daddy issues and he has an invisible friend who appears to be a poltergeist.  The poltergeist asked Locke to "help" him.  Ben gets jealous and shoots Locke.  Please!

No, you are not alone....we're definitely entering shark jumping territory here.  They will have to redeem themselves to a great degree IMO in the next episode and in the finale in order to keep from losing viewers 'en masse' over the summer and long fall.  Remember, Lost doesn't start back until Feb. 2008!

I like the idea of the nature thing.  The technology "scares" him.  Let me just ask a question?  How long have mason jars and laterns been around?  Shouldnt it be pottery jugs and torches?  How far back does "technology" go?

IMO-jumping the shark....nah not yet, but this is getting really wierd.

This is a great theory!  You are always seeing on ghost shows where lights flicker or go out, or cars stop running.  Maybe the spirits ARE pulling power from them.  Jacob is not scared of technology....he draws power from it, and Ben can't keep him under control if he is not weak.  Ben has probably imprisoned Jacob in an area with weak electromagnetic forces or something ,with no power to draw from.  Locke shines the flashlight on him and he is able to draw from that to overpower Ben.  That may also be why he was momentarily able to appear.  Maybe Ben is surpressing Jacob's appearance somehow, and when Jacob attacked him and threw him into the wall, he momentarily lost control and Jacob was able to manifest himself.

Right, notice where Jacob's aggression went to.  It wasn't focused on Locke, the holder of the flashlight, it went to Ben.  If it was technology Jacob hated, why not throw Locke back?

Exactly!  I was thinking that same thing, and that's why (coupled with the ring of ash) I thought that Ben must have found some way to imprison Jacob and was psychically holding him back while Locke was there.   I didn't think about the flashlight, but I figured that when Locke started getting argumentative and it distracted Ben, Jacob made his move.

It was sort of like he threw Ben back and then was thrashing around trying to get loose.

In regards to technology, how was the picture illuminated?
I am sure it wasnt a candle, must be electricity already there, thats technology isn't it?

Moonlight?? That would be the reason part of it is shadowed?? Maybe? I don't have it to rewatch to make sure. Sorry if it's a stupid idea.

And the Jacob getting his chance to pounce on Ben "theory"...me likey! lol

I have issues with saying Jacob is a ghost. Though he appears to be ghost-like, I just can't see this show going in that direction. *Just an opinion, not a fact*

In the Jacob scene, the camera panned down to the seat of the chair and quite clearly showed a black ... something. It looks too well formed to be a powdered something, but too misshapen to be a mat or cushion. Either way, less than a minute later, after the shack started shaking, we see the chair again, and the black-something is gone. Thoughts?
