but you can only save the world one step at a time, learn how the strongest species on the planet adapt to new surroundings and you can help push evolution along

the world is one huge place, and there is lots of it to save, the island is no Ark though, but it obviously has some powers (healing/invisibility) so why not make it Noahs Ark

So, how many believe it was a division between spiritual and scientific that caused the Dharma/Others split?  Also, what caused the further split amongst the current group of Others?  Is it that some of them want to use science to solve their problems (fertility), while Others trust the Island to do it?

I keep coming back to one question when I think of Ben and his origins...If he was born on the Island and a part of Darma, they would have had to have been there back in the 60's ( assuming Ben looks his age, about 40ish). When did they say that Darma first started the project, and does that time frame match?
I like the spiritual re-birth angle, or even that Ben is not a part of Darma, but a part of a civilization that was already there. Maybe Ben's civilization was dying out and when they took over Darma they, or he, saw it as a way to use Darma to solve the problem by using there resources.

This is a great question in that it kind of brings us back to the core issues. I am certain that in this week epi we will get back to that as well and in next weeks podcast we'll revisit the Dharma orientation video from TLE and really try and beat this up (if there is anything left to beat up).

I've given up trying to figure out the whole Dharma business. I think Dharma was originally good and was taken over by Hanso, etc., but then we have the Natives, etc.... I'm really not sure what's going on with them anymore Undecided

I can't wait until Wednesday to get some MAJOR Answers!

great theory Casino, I was thinking along the same lines
but you put it beautifully I really do believe that the recruits came there for the greater good, you figure they gave up everything and you olny do something like that if you believe your making a difference or there's a lot of money invlolved and I've seen no evidence of that (no bottles of Dom, jaccuzzis or bling....LOL)

Casino,

I think we are almost on the same page.  You think Dharma was trying to save the world.  Ben got jaded and gave up on society, working to create a utopia cut off from the outside world, which is why Richard and Ben don't see eye to eye on the pregnancy issue.

My idea was almost the same except that I thought of Dharma as the "evil empire" planning to expedite the end of society and all its evils and start new.  My theory was that Ben would be revealed to be the hero who saved the world from Dharma (without the accolades, because the world never knew what was about to hit it) and now just wants to be left alone in HIS little Utopia cut off from the world and all its ugliness.  He strikes me as a spoiled little genius who, despite his obvious mental dominance, is still timid and naive, and would be happy to never have to deal with "reality".

But now I have to agree with you.  I keep coming back to that polar bear (see my logo), living in a warmer climate (global warming).  If Dharma was so evil as to facilitate a "New World Order", would they give a rat's ass about whether or not they still had polar bears?  Probably not.
Obviously we have WAY more info to go on since this thread was hot.  Casino & lostfan777 were right on with most of their thoughts, but the later shows in s3 have fine-tuned some of the details (how Ben came to the Island, circumstances surrounding the Purge, etc.).

In my mind, however, the question still remains- what does Richard see as the Others' reason for being on the Island?  What is their highest purpose?  Is it simply to have their own "Village?"

maybe they are trying to get on the island to experiment/learn more about it's properites.  The "others" are trying to PROTECT the island from being taken advantage of (in a sense).

I was going to say, "Hold on, just 41 days left!" but that's just until the season starts.  With the disruption of the 'rescue' boat coming and all the mystery coming with it, who knows how long it will be before we get answers to any of the old questions.  So do what you have to to keep your thoughts fresh, we may be in for a long wait even after Jan 31!  Not that I'm complaining.  After all, no one is holding us captive on an island, we've always been free to leave.  As for me, I'm staying till the end!
