Hi...

I was just trying to figure out when we heard or found out the parachutist's name (Naomi). I know it's in the episode credits online, but have our Losties discovered this fact yet? I don't remember it being said or read in this episode anywhere.

So I wonder what her full name is - maybe another fun anagram like Ethan Rom (Other Man). I guess we need a lastname to make much out of it. Right now with her first name the only things I can see are "I am on" or "No I am", neither of which pack much meaning.

Thanks!

Okay - but the Losties don't know her name yet. I thought I was going crazy since I saw all these posts about Naomi and never heard her name mentioned.

Thanks.

And her name is another Dickens nod. "Little Dorrit" is one of his novels -- so we know Desmond has read it!  I can't keep up with the book hints they drop.

Juggy: how did we know Naomi's name before the episode that she landed? Was it on Spoiler Fix? I don't remember her name from any spoilers... Undecided

Her name derives from actually a serial that Dicken's wrote to make some money and it deals with the usual Dicken themes of social injustice, secrets, and betrayal.  More weighting is given to the paradox of debtor's prison than in his other works.... basically, if you got into debt and couldn't repay it, they threw you in jail.  Of course, in jail, you couldn't make any money so it was a real Catch-22.

Anyway, whole families were thrown into prison in this manner.  It was perhaps the worst idea I have seen next to slavery.

Here is two given plot summaries:

"The Dorrit family, William and his three children live in the Marshalsea, a debtor's prison. The youngest Amy, Little Dorrit was born in the prison. All three children are allowed to work outside and return at night to be with their father. Little Dorrit does sewing for Mrs. Clemens and when her son, Arthur returns from India, he helps get Dorrit freed from prison.

When the family suddenly comes into money, all of them except Little Dorrit become obnoxious and snobbish. She falls in love with the older Arthur. When he is eventually imprisoned in the Marshalsea, she helps him and they marry in the prison church.
"
Jack Goodstein, Resident Scholar

" A physically small, but courageous girl by the name of Amy, or affectionately referred to as Little Dorrit, is born in a debtors prison in London. Though the youngest of three children, she takes care of her family and sews for Mrs.Clennem, a strange old lady. When Mrs.Clennem's son, Arthur, becomes interested in helping the Dorrit family (and succeeds in doing so) he is unaware of the love that Amy has for him. The Dorrits find they have a vast fortune, and as a result free themselves from the prison, and soon are spoiled by their wealth.
Through faulty investments and forgery, Clennem is plunged into debt, and Little Dorrit with her seemingly vast wealth comes to ask him to marry her. By this time Arthur has realized his love, and hers, but still refuses to take her money. When Amy tells him that her family's wealth was also lost through the investments, they marry."
Helena Woolums, Resident Scholar

Thanks for the short version of the book.  Interesting that Dickens' own father was imprisoned in the Marshalsea.
