There were police records on Sawyer in Australia when he was kicked out... plus the shrimp man's death was in the papers. Possibly Sawyer's con man friend was in cahoots with the Others. There are a lot of ways that people who have moles everywhere could know these things.
Sayid's actions were almost obviously told to the Others by Kelvin, who made him do those things.
In my opinion...there is a HUGE difference between "moles" getting information and hidden and shameful events being found out. I mean for God's sake...Juliet said in passing during a moment of emotional breakdown that she wanted her ex to be run over by a bus! Then BAM! It happened! Something more to it all. |

There are conspiracy theorists out there that think the government is all up in everyone's business day in and day out...so is this what the producers are bringing to this show??...that the OTHERS are in everyone's business and can use it whatever way THEY want to? O dear Lord...

In the last episode, Ben told "Richard" to "get back here as soon as possible". So they have the ability to leave and come back? certain ones? operatives in the field? If Jacob could cure cancer, why would they have to stay on the island? Ben is a liar. we know that. "My name is Henry Gale, I'm from Minnesota." I'm starting to think that the memories were put there by Darhma/Jacob/Ben/Widmore/Christian. but they didn't know that Desmond was going to kill(?) Kelvin/Inman and that the button wouldn't get pushed, and the plane would crash, and there are never that many survivors, if any, from 20,000 feet. Remember, they didn't lose power to an engine and glide in. The plane ripped apart. impact on land or water would more than likely kill you. maybe, no plane crash? just an implant that let's the REAL bad guy control what you think. even what Ben and the others think or know? am i reaching to far?

I think that the original "Others" (that is, Ben and anyone else who has been on the island their 'whole life') can't leave. For whatever reason, they cannot go to "the real world." Juliet wanted to bring some of the women off the island, and it seemed as though they were implying that the infertility experienced by the Others might have something to do with the island. It would only make sense that if Juliet's work failed (and it has so far on the island, other than the questionable Claire situation), then why NOT go to the mainland? I think it's because they can't.
Back on subject...I've jumped off the Smokie bandwagon. Ben asked Mikhail to get him detailed files on all of the 815 passengers in Juliet's flashback. As Penny Widmore so aptly put it, "With enough money and determination you can find anyone." Or, presumably, find information on anyone.

I am starting to agree with you Beann. It's just odd that they HAVE to stay on THAT island and prove medicine/science can fix this issue. Why? Is anyone having this problem off the island? Anyhoo...very good and valid point about smokey. The thing is NOT able to download information...oh wait, do I want to commit to that? lol |

All information gathered by even the most thorough search would not be able to turn up much information....except for the time he was caught. Look up a story called "E for effort," and you will understand how the Others get their info. Unless the Others set up the circumstances of all of the survivor's lives (a theory that I would not exclude), they could not get the info on Sawyer unless they were there!
When you utilize circumstantial evidence to make conclusions, you can be wrong as much as you are right. The Others haven't been wrong yet.
They were there either by manufacturing the circumstances to record the losties responses (very Dharma) or they have some miraculous device to look back in time.

I do think that Smokie downloads memories, whether the others then receive this information I don't know. I'm leaning towards yes, Ben or somebody high up, maybe even the infamous Jacob, somehow knows how to work with Smokie and get it's files. This is the only plausible answer to them knowing abut Sawyer, something that nobody saw him do and he never spoke to anyone about, it was raining so all evidence would have been lost before the body was found.
Only those with power would know about controlling Smokie, it would be a tool of manipulation the others use against members of their own ranks aswell as intruders to the island.
This kind of information can not be found in any database or anything but Smokie.
The major hole in this is that I can't remember Sawyer or Sayid and Smokie encounters.
