If the plane had just crashed overhead, and the pilot in season one said that they were 1000 miles off course, then we can presume that contact was lost for about 90-100 minutes.  If it took Ben and Juliet 15 minutes to walk up to Mikail's little bungalo, then call the total time two hours.

Mikail is watching numerous screens broadcasting news of the missing plane from a lot of places.  He knows the total number of passengers.  It's almost like the news had already occurred and he is looking in an archive to retrieve information.  (Imagine ALL news arriving to your home for the next year and, when you need or want to, you just look up a story).

Also, MIKAIL SUPPLIED BEN WITH A COPY OF RACHAEL'S MEDICAL RECORD.  How did he get that from a TV screen?  Were there Dharma spies watching Rachael?  What was the date on the medical record (couldn't see on my black and white TV)?

There was once a short story called "E for Effort."  Science fiction stuff.  In the story, these military radio operators discovered an interesting effect by jingling the tubes.... They could watch the past, the REAL past.  One guy got out of the military and used the effect to make movies.... He'd watch Napoleon and his army swarm across Europe and copy clips, hire actors for voices, and produce the thing.... He won a bunch of awards before his little genie was discovered.  Didn't turn out a happy story.  Anyway, the point is that (I think) Mikail is doing the same thing.

It's kinda like the movie, Deja Vu, BUT YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR.  That is why Mikail was wasting his time on news coverage of a missing plane...he's waiting for a passenger list.  After that, the little trick is to find all the characters and study them.

As for the medical report, they obviously have people monitoring Rachel. Richard was there video taping Rachel, supposedly live. And, if you believe Ben, someone knew her cancer had returned, and someone was able to heal her. He also told Richard to get back as soon as possible, implying there is some travel back and forth to the island. Most likely, the medical record was brought back on one of these trips. Unless the whole thing was a con by Ben to trick Juliet into staying on the island.

There are two other sandy haired females who traverse that clip of Rachael....What if Juliet saw herself!  That is why nobody can leave the island.

I don't think we can say for sure how much time passes between the crash and the visit to The Flame.

Two issues are covered here:

- He had the news feeds pulled up.  I can imagine that the story would break that the plane was lost at about the time it was due to land (a few hours after the crash).  He would put 2 and 2 together and begin work on the lists right away.  I have no problem with this timeline.

- Ben dispatched Richard as soon as he saw that Juliet was losing faith, maybe even before she demanded to leave.  Heck, he could've fibbed the whole story about her cancer returning just to say "if you'll stay, Jacob will personally cure her".  The proof of this 'miracle' would be simply filming her healthy.

I have no trouble with either timeline.  I don't suspect any alternate realities either.

I am interested when Ben says "now to Richard in Arcadia Park." I think thats what he says anyhow.  Wikipedia shows Arcadia Park being in Dallas, Texas.  Wasn't her sister in Florida?

There is also an Arcadia Park in Maine.

I'm assuming that there is another one in Miami.

Of course he was watching news footage of a missing plane.  Why couldn't it be archive, historical, footage?  He has to follow the thread.  He was doing this within minutes of the plane passing overhead.

Now, I know that news has become fast, but what was the last bit of news you heard out of Australia?  If a plane that can stay in the air 14 hours is out of communication for 90 minutes....that leaves seconds for news all around the world to gather a story and put it on in a polished, detailed, fashion.  He was watching a compendium, an archive.

How could it be archieved if it just happened. This is not a mystery. All news channels jump on stories as quick as possible. Today they were showing live footage of a horse being rescued. They hear about a plane missing they will be all over the story. It was live news feeds, thats it.

Didn't the pilot say their radio went out and they were flying blind for about an hour? They turned around and headed for FIJI. I think that might fall into the BREAKING NEW category in todays world. BTW, how come we didn't see all those monitors when Locke,Sayid and Kate hit the flame? They checked out the whole place. Did I miss that?

jugdish.... exactly!

how could it be archived if it just happened?  the other's have had access to knowledge that nobody could....sawyer killing the wrong man, rachel's medical record, juliet's discovery, her husband being hit by a bus.....on and on!

mikail supplied the medical record, mikail is searching the archive for info. (now that he knows what to look for)....

the real question is how do they have this information in the first place?

why can't we remember the future....stephen hawking.

Just to muddy the waters a bit more.  Most of the airspace over the Pacific and Atlantic are not within radar coverage.  There is some coverage but most of it is within a 75 mile range of land.  Trans-oceanic flights are usually conducted by GPS direct headings now days.  Some times the only contact a company or FAA officials have with aircraft over the oceans is radio.  So if radio contact was lost there is the possibility of "Oceanic" not knowing where the plane was.  Why go to the media with that negative PR until they had too?  Perhaps this is just a writing error and we are reading too much into it.  On the other hand I have 5 fingers and am often times baffled at where the story line goes.
