I am sorry, I can not express myself in English very well. I think ,I should change "smokey" in "smoke".
Maybe you can imagine a car which we can not see it ,but its exhaust gas when it run.
I think the black smoke is the exhaust gas of a machine.

Then you are saying there are three machines because we see three different starts of the smoke if you look in the investigations by SLEDGE.
I think there are three destinct sounds created by the smoke monster
One is the ratchet sound, which sound to me more like a roller coaster.
next is the sound which sounds exactly like that sound the ghost makes in the game Mario 64 sounds like.(I know some of you might not know what im talking about but its the sound you heard in expose when the spiders came a crawling.
and the 3rd sound is what we here when he is way far off in the distance and it is what i relate to a dinosour sound.

I looked up electromagnetic boots used by NASA. It was the sole that looked similar. However, I don't know if his boots are really those used by astronauts. Sorry.
