The black smoke is the exhaust smoke of the monster. The monster is a machine which we can not see,because it use light refraction to make himself stealth. From this, we can explain why the smoke can not go through the fence,why the smoke can catch Locke, why the smoke can kill Eko. In deed ,the machine did all these.  ************************************************ I am sorry, I can not express myself in English very well. I think ,I should change "smokey" in "smoke". Maybe you can imagine a car which we can not see it ,but its exhaust gas when it run. I think the black smoke is the exhaust gas of a machine. |

There was a news story that just aired about scientists creating a cloaking device (on a small scale) by re-directing light around an object. That could be what's going on with Smokey.
I think the movement of the smoke itself, though, is too coordinated to simply be exhaust from a machine. Plus, why make machine invisible and then have the exhaust clearly visible?

I think this is an interesting idea, with smokey being invisible, the writers said that we have seen him and not known it, maybe he hangs out and keeps still

I have long thought that the monsta was actually the flatus (gas) of the island coming to life. That would explain a lot!
Smokey always arrives with an explosion.
He always appears at the wrong time.
There's never a bathroom around when you have a smokey.
People always seem to be eating something before it's smokey time.
You can never tell where smokey is going to float.
You never see a smokey by a woman.
Smokey can be silent but deadly.
Feel free to add to this theory. But I think that smokey is just an island air biscuit.

We know from the blast door map that there was a malfunction with the cerberus (smoke?).
This could be why we see exhaust.

Ive stated in another thread that maybe the malfunction of cerebrus is where the fence is. And they have noticed that he stops right there for some reason. And its not the exhause of a monster because then why would we see images in it. That wouldnt make any since. |

The monster exists in an adjoining reality and all we see of it is the apparition. I like that word....apparition. Could I be spending too much time here?

Have you noticed that whenever the monster drags or picks somebody up, there is the identical sound of a ratchet on a boat hoist. Identical. Rat tat tat tat tat tat tat....... The monster uses ropes and ratchets.
