THE MONSTER, Facts and Speculation:

What we know about the Monsta:

-doesn’t cross the fence
-appears with sounds
-can emit light
-didn’t appear until the rain stops
-left rapidly initially from Julia
-can appear as a person (Echo)
-knocks down trees
-pulled Locke a distance towards a hole
-kills by impact or multiple flesh wounds (pilot)
-able to divide and recombine
-took a hiatus
-may have been present in the scene with the spiders
-has a heavy sound similar to heavy metal being shifted, another sound emitted in regular frequency like scanning, and a woooooohhhhhh sound as well…..all mixed with some animal like sounds.  Scary
-appears to fly but does not pass over the height of the fence.
-appeared as a cerebrus while coming towards Julia
 


Please add objective, factual, items to the above with a separate paragraph devoted to speculation based upon what we have all identified....ie.  What we know divided from What we think.

There is also the fact that it sucks big time at hide and seek.  Seriously, those hollow tree things that everyone finds refuge in...
Was it really knocking down trees or just moving them?  I mean, did the survivors ever find a trail of broken trees leading back to the monster's origin?  No.  The only thing I have SEEN it destroy was the ground.  When it popped out of it.  Oh, and Eko.

I don't think that it is destroying the ground as much as it is throwing up particles of island magnetite which it then manipulates.  Otherwise, why wouldn't it just blow up those it seeks to kill?

it probably pops up from from underground tunnels refered to on the blast door map

"a rabbit has more than one hole" or something like that

also about it being cerberus, you hear three distinct sounds (the roller coaster, the dinosaur like sound, and what sounds like those ghosts from mario when it is moving) so maybe there are three different monsters that can separate and recombine that all form cerberus (which would make a pretty darn good security system)

Also, it seems like it can capture memories from people's pasts (i.e. eko's memories on the frozen frames where the cam goes through the smoke on ep 2x10) so in the last episode, those flashes we saw were all probably julia's memories that it was "scanning"

as for the reason for it not being able to get into bunches of tree, it cant pop up in there because there arent tunnels under trees (cuz of roots) but no idea why it doesnt just break into the trees

I have long thought that the monsta was actually the flatus (gas) of the island coming to life.  That would explain a lot! 

Smokey always arrives with an explosion. 
He always appears at the wrong time. 
There's never a bathroom around when you have a smokey. 
People always seem to be eating something before it's smokey time.
You can never tell where smokey is going to float.
You never see a smokey by a woman.
Smokey can be silent but deadly.

Feel free to add to this theory.  But I think that smokey is just an island air biscuit.

I think that smokey splits up and can do things indepently. It can scan Eko or scout the losties.

But I thnik that all parts must be together to form an attack.

Sometime smokey means there's a bear in the cave.
Smokey can make some wierd noises.
Sometimes you have to check your underwear after smokey appears.
