Juliet confesed they knew about the smoke monster, but didn't know too much about it and it didn't like the fence. My thought is, if the losites were able to climb over the fence, why couldn't smokie?

I thought the same thing. Is there something connecting it to the groung, or does it have a limit on how high it can climb.

that is logical but remeber the losties went over but above the pole where there is no sensors. maybe there is some kind of force field in between those sensor things and they go up hight you just have to be on the pole and out of the way of the sensors to get over it.

never thought of that. Maybe Smokie is too dumb to fly up. If Smokie wanted Juliet and Kate dead, why didn't it rip the tree apart that they were in.

Smokey looked like he could get pretty high when he was flinging Eko around. Either there's a gap where you can sneak over above the sensors or this is a huge error in logic by the writers. Or is it possible someone turned off the fence after Patchy squirted blood out his ears?

Smokie is tied to the ground somehow. Remember it tried to drag Locke into a hole. And it had the same explosions out of the ground tonight that it did in that episode.

I think that once it was caught in the force of the fence it fryed it's train of thought and it didn't know which way to go, but to get out of the force of the fence.

Yeah and I had a question about it being in parts too...moving fluidly, but splitting up and connecting again...

A bigger question that I think we should be asking is where has smoky been? Why did he reappear now?
Does it have something to do with Locke? When he was in hatchville, did we ever see smoky?

I thought about this too...something may be traveling underground...tunnels maybe? But still traveling underground why woud it not make it through the fence....

Maybe the fence poles extend into the ground. My first thought when Juliet activated the fence was that it was intended to keep Smokie out. The Losties certainly got around it easily enough.

Maybe there are certain frequencies that the fence could be set to. One setting could be particularily devistating to smokie, another causing ear-bleeding.

the thing that stood out the most for me about the second monster scene was when Juliette turned on the defense fence, why didn't the monster just float on top of it? lol. I was wondering this myself. Initially I thought maybe the invisible field also created some sort of dome over the land contained within, but then that would conflict with the Losties simply climbing over the 'fence' a few episodes ago. Perhaps the field really was not on and Patchy somehow fooled everyone? Smokie is tied to the ground somehow. Remember it tried to drag Locke into a hole. And it had the same explosions out of the ground tonight that it did in that episode.
I thought about this too...something may be traveling underground...tunnels maybe? But still traveling underground why woud it not make it through the fence.... That would be interesting if Smokie is actually 'tethered' somewhere underground. Perhaps TPTB were trying to convey exactly that message to the viewers? If this is the case, I wonder if Smokie can sort of reach the end of this imaginary tether? Possibly a reason why Smokie never appears out on the beach front? Hmm...
