Why did they beat on Jack?

So I still can't figure out why Bai Ling's family kicked Jack's ass. I suppose the surface answer would be because he forced her to give him a tattoo of his destiny, something that was only reserved for her people, but there has to be another reason for a beating of that severity.

Any thoughts?
