I think it is like this:

Sonar can be used for under water communication or like radar.  It works like bats.  You send out a sound wave or "ping" and it bounces off stuff and comes back to tell you where the ice-bergs are.  Other vessels can pick up this signal and tell where you are also.  So the sub follows the pings to find the island since the island messes with regular navigation equipment. :)

so this would have called the sub?

Others probably disabled it then.

Interesting idea, but I think it would drive the whales off. If the sonar is disabled, then ships cannot be guided in - if the satellite is down, then there is no outside communication - yet the Others seems to know alot about Jack et al....so it begs the question - is there a backup system that works??

Or did they get all the info on Jack and losties before the sky turned purple?

no, i don't think that's the access.  way too crude.  why would they have new washer and dryers but be using a computer from the 80's for communication?  doesn't make sense to me does it to you?  they have much more advanced communication in their compound.

Don't forget they were trusting the safety of the entire island to an Apple II!  Not sure they have better stuff elsewhere

as much as we THINK they were trusting the safety of the entire island (if not the world) to the apple II, it does still exist doesn't it?  so was the purpose of the computer to REALLY save the island/world?  or was it all mind games?

There was lots of metal crap flying around and a big purple flash that could be measured in the Arctic.  I am saying this was real.

Even when they were at the very centre of the explosion.
