what was up with the title? "Trisha Tanaka is dead"
« on: March 01, 2007, 04:39:29 PM »
Ok, we know the t.v. reporter died but can't they come up with a better title.  I found that some other fans were talking about this on abc's site.  I thought it was humorous at some of the names they came up with.

The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round.

Road Trip

"Up in smoke"
"Cheech and Chong and the magic bus"

Bad Luck 4 The Fat F:)ck

"Dude, where's my van?"

Better CLUCK Next Time

Despite the title being an obscure one...  the writers probably chose it to convey one of the reasons why Hurley ended up in Australia or on the plane...

I just thought it was really interesting that the writers decided to incorporate the whole meteroite/asteroid thing hitting the chicken stand because Hurley had vaguely mentioned it before in a previous episode...

It's interesting to note that several odd things that happened to Hurley post-lottery, and  surrounding the numbers would make him think that he is cursed... Suffice to say, the episode gave us the understanding that his dad and finding the van helped him gain "hope" that he wasn't indeed cursed and in fact he even encouraged Chralie to face his fate and look Death in the eye, and so on... Good old, fun-time Hurley... :)

The psychic was offered $1,000 to say Hurley's Dad put her up to this, Then he offers her $10,000 to say it. I am not sure about you but I would take the money and say anything you wanted me to say (if I were in her position)

I do believe he did put her up to it, but I am just saying...

As far as the title- to me, it communicated the severity of the "curse."  It's one thing for a house to burn down & for your crush to run off with your best friend, but people dying is another.  Although the psychic was paid off, she was correct in saying that death surrounds the numbers. :-\  Tricia Tanaka's death seemed to be the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back...what ultimately put Hurley on the flight to Sydney to try to make sense of it all.

I read some of those other title suggestions, too! :D  "Dude!  What the Cluck?!?!?"  ;D

We think alike... I was going to say "the straw that broke the camels back" earlier but for some reason I didn't... anyway, just adding that I had the same sentiments about Hurley reaching his wit's end and wanting to change all the bad stuff that had been happening to him and the meteor incident just seemed to be the thing that did it then his dad put him over the top... I like the other suggestions though, and I agree that Hurley's comedic timing is more deserving of a funny title...

PL, you're awesome... :D

The first thing I thought of when I heard the title of this episode is: It might be a reference to the old English (or is it Scottish)song "John Barleycorn is Dead" Consider the lyrics to that song:
There were three men
Came from the west
Their fortunes for to tell,
And the life of John Barleycorn
As well
They laid him three furrows deep,
Laid clods upon his head,
The these three men made a solemn vow
John Barleycorn was dead.
They let him die for a very long time
Till the rain from heaven did fall,
Then little Sir John sprang up his head
And he did amaze them all.
They let him stand till the midsummer day,
Till he looked both pale and wan.
Then little Sir John he grew a long beard
And so became a man.
They have hired men with the scythes so sharp
To cut him off at the knee,
They rolled and they tied him around the waist,
The served him barbarously.
They have hired men with the crab-tree sticks,
To cut him skin from bone,
And the miller he has served him worse than that,
For he's ground him between two stones.
They've wheeled him here, they've wheeled him there,
They've wheeled him to a barn,
And they have served him worse than that,
They've bunged him in a vat.
They have worked their will on John Barleycorn
But he lived to tell the tale,
For they pour him out of an old brown jug
And they call him home brewed ale

I just anagrammed 'tricia tanaka is dead' and came up with, "Radiate the satanic kid".

Radiate implies, radiation therapy (UV light?) or radiate with love.

Was Karl being radiated with 'love' (like Jacob) in room 23?

The title was there because that was the tipping point for him to really believe in a curse, just as the van running was a tipping point for him to believe in hope.

and BTW, am I the only one who thinks the reporter's name was a little too close to the Family Guy's 'Asian reporter' Tricia Takanawa.

Seems a little lazy, unless it is an homage.
