They probably will do that which means he doesnt know the exact directions. However once they let Jack see the village and how they live then he will know that it is on the island somewhere, he would get a general view of surrounding landmarks, the mountains etc to know what kind of area to look for.
And at the end of the day its an island and you would run it to it eventually.

They think Karl is with the losties anyway - he could always lead them to their houses.
I don't think they were going to let Jack go anyway, whether he can find his way back or not.
