My theory is that instead of parallel universes or time travel, the power of the island is that it enables Special people to project thoughts, images, whispers or to watch/listen to themselves or others in the past.

Desmond's experience is more raw and powerful due to his proximity.

Locke had the juice (felt his destiny), as did Eko (smoke signals), and I think Ben is the Jedi master at it.  He oftens seems to make decisions which cause things go his way in the end.

Heck, one of the predominant themes of the entire show is flashbacks to the past.   Specifically, how a series of freak occurences have brought these people together.  A simple decision or twist of fate puts in motion a chain of events...people influenced to act or not act at key points.

I think this thread is underrated, because it's from a red shirt. Come on people, even if is too soon to lock on that, it open LOTS of discutions.

The moment I read it the image of Dan Pickett popped up in my mind. He and his wife for sure weren't special people. The grunts...

And other thing, GOOD PEOPLE??? And bout Ben saying he came for LOCKE? Locke that have a LOT of experiences on the island? Could it be a try to make a common ground, and after they were done with Jack, bring Locke, Hurley and other "good people" to those experiments?

Sure, there is a lot to discuss here, and I wish for some people talking here.

Smokey turned into Locke. That gave him the power of being always right. Hence he is the good one, winner of game and everything else for now on.
