I haven't read all of the responses, but I did read the entire theory and most of what T said on this page. I agree with the entire first half of your theory. Charlie is not dead How do we know that there is only one photo? I only see two distinct Parallel Universes in Des's flashback (aside from the ones that the Oracle knew). I now replace the first half of your theory for my theory

I am looking for your guidance here. So say Penny saves Desmond in one thread of time, he could still be on the island in another thread? Can the parallel threads ever merge to one? Not for sure, but anything it seems can happen on this show. I wouldn't be shocked at this point. I still stand by the opinion that the island that we see currently is on "Earth time"...our time. We will know this when we see the Tsunami of 2004 affect the island. That will solve any lingering questions as to whether or not the island is in our current thread of time. There can be no explanation other than that, if we see the Tsunami. But the Red Sox winning the world series also solidified that idea as well- even though it was on videotape. What will happen in other threads of time, is, shall we say, for the TPTB to determine. When did the 2004 tsunami occur? Which tsunami are you talking about? Would it actually affect an island in the Pacific? I do believe that Multiple Parallel Universes are able to fold into one. The problem is that it is very unlikely. In my opinion, a Parallel Universe is formed by ANY choice a person makes. Therefore, if you chose to wear a red shirt today, in an Alternate Reality, you wore a blue shirt. These two Universes will most likely reform into one once you take that shirt off. However, if you chose to leave your job for a different one, you will never (most likely) see the other reality again. Therefore, there are not technically Infinite Universes, but a very large number of them.

I do not believe that parallel universes are formed by what colored shirt you decide on, it would need to be a more substantial event than that.

Quite possible. I'm not sure exactly, but I think that any choice creates an alternate universe. But if it's an insignificant choice, then the two universes fold back into one. I'm probably wrong, but hey. The entire Alternate Universe thing is just a Hypothesis anyways.

Great Post! The only problem I have with this (great) theory is Desmond being the "fulcrum" of it all. The way I see it Jack is the fulcrum, with Kate and Sawyer in the mix somehow. Jack is the leader, the savior, the shepherd. Everyone else around him only helps or hinders his final destiny, which is saving the world of course! Most likely he sacrifices himself to do it in the end. I can't see it any other way (as TV show anyway ). Anyway, that's my 2 cents!

imho:
There are infinite MPUs, and every minor decision by everything with free will results in a different timeline. Even if all future events after this decision are the same, the time lines are not "merged", just indistiguishable.
Also, let's separate the idea of multiple parallel universes and time travel. Meditating on what could've happened if other choices had been made in the past would give one a glimpse of possible alternate realities, or MPUs. Being aware of youself back in the past (with limited memory to boot!) like Desmond and being able to make different decisions is time travel. Thinking Locke has made a speech which actually hasn't happened yet is time travel. Having foreknowledge of a lightning strike tomorrow because you've already lived through it is time travel.
Here's a chart of possible outcomes, based on Desmond's decisions:
____(Des marries Pen)__________(Plane doesn't crash, button pushed by Kelvin)___World ends? / Paint Can / 1997--------------(Des doesn't marry)--(Army)--(Sailboat)--(Button)--(Failsafe)--(Charlie struck by lightning) \______(Des doesn't marry)--(Army)--(Sailboat)--(Button)--(Failsafe)--(not struck)--(Charlie drowns) \_____(Des doesn't marry)--(Army)--(Sailboat)--(Button)--(Failsafe)--(not struck)-(no drown)-(? death)
These are 4 MPUs. "Travelling" from one to the other is a vertical leap in this diagram. This would not benefit the traveller with any foreknowledge. In fact, the traveller would be confused as to why things are different from the way they remember them.
In order to see future trouble or change the past, the traveller would have to move horizontally on the diagram.

There is also the theory that time does not actually move forward, that we just perceive that it does as we move from one reality to the next. Everything we have ever done or ever will do is happening at exactly the same instant, our movement into each instant gives us the perception of time moving in a line forward.
Some have theorized that if everything and all possible outcomes are happening at the same instant, can we effect which reality we choose to move into and possibly move between them? From our perspective, it could appear that we were moving back in time if we chose to move to an event that we already experienced.
I may not have explained that very well, someone else I am sure could do better. Feel free to disregard or attack.

So if charlie has died in two of the parallel threads but is still alive in the one we are watching, does anyone ever die??
Everybody dies some time. Har har Every outcome of every decision could be plotted in a similar fashion as the above diagram. Picture infinite branches diverging at every point that anything (with free will) makes a choice. Now we're talking about a 3-D model (or 4-D if you want to get weird). In the center is the first event ever. Around the outside is Realm of Possibilities©, which grows larger as time moves outward from that first event. A dimensional traveller can move laterally from one set of outcomes to another...from the universe where Desmond ended up on the island to the one where he married Pen. A time traveller can move inward or outward through history. If these two types of travelling existed but were mutually exclusive, the dimensional traveller could only hop from one universe (spot on the outside) to another, but it would always be the same date/time. He would never predict the future or alter the past. The time traveller could go back in time, alter history, and move forward again along a different path. This would enable the time traveller to enter an alternate parallel universe. If there is a point to all this, it would be that Desmond would have to be time travelling in order to make the historical changes and predictions he's shown to be making. It's more than just MPU shifting. By the way, the Realm of Possibilities theory came to me about 10 years ago while staring at a Fractal with a greasy piece of paper on my tongue.

I think there are more Libby questions to be answered so hopefully we will see more of her is someones flashback.
Maybe with Anna lucia and Eko they can use some clips they already shot to throw them in somewhere. (just kidding)
