By now, most of you have heard that "Flashes Before Your Eyes" was the lowest-rated "Lost" episode ever. There's an AP story making the rounds today where a TV analyst predicts one more season. To which I say: Good! Or more accurately: Potentially good!
Who cares if 19,999,999 other people like the show. The only thing that matters is whether you like it. And if you do, whether you get to see it played out to its logical conclusion.
Both Lindelof and Cuse have said repeatedly lately that an endpoint for the show needs to be set. Lindelof has said many times he thinks 100 episodes is the right spot. So do the math. We're at Episode 56 right now. We'll be at 72 by season's end. One more season would get us to 96 by May of 2008. If 100 was optimal, I'm sure they can tell the story in 96, but if you're ABC, I think you allow THE FINAL FOUR to be made and you market it that way over the Summer of 2008: "Join us this September to see how it all ends, four weeks of answers, four weeks of connections, four weeks until the series finale that will blow your mind. Coming this September, LOST, THE FINAL FOUR, etc. etc."
Don't get me wrong. If somehow, the plug was pulled after this season, then, you're talking a tragedy. But if the low rating move us toward a plan to logically conclude the show then that's a good thing.

As much as I would hate for it to end
I am ready for some answers and conclusions
so yeah I agree.

(I would prefer the old time-slot though)

Answers = good.
End in sight (even if very far off) = good.
Old time slot = GOOD.

Well, it's a mix of good news and bad news.

Good news:  I agree that a finite timeline for the series bodes well. I've found that when a good series dies a slow and painful death (X-Files, Alias), the lousy episodes at the end cause me to rethink the quality of the earlier episodes I once saw as brilliant. 4 seasons of a killer show like Lost would make my DVD collection very happy. Plus, without having to fight for Nielsen audience share ("Will they pick us up for another season?"), the writers are free to write the story as they see fit.

Bad news:  Viewers are fickle, as are programming directors. If the ratings drop off TOO much, the series could be unceremoniously yanked altogether, without having the chance to finish its storyline. I've seen it happen to lots of good shows. It doesn't matter if the low ratings are a consequence of stupid timeslots or lousy promotion.

So I'm hoping for somewhere in between:  Ratings low enough that the writers get a definite end date, but high enough that they don't get the axe.

I want some answers soon so it would be good to know it was coming to an end, I'd be happy with one more season after this.

I would like two more good years for sure. Have everyone commit for two more years. People would know that an end was coming. I love the new time slot.

Show goes on too long: X-Files -- seemed as if there was never an end in sight.

Show cut off in its prime: Twin Peaks -- Lynch and Frost were following a well planned story arc, but the plug was pulled and the conclusion had to be rushed through in two episodes. It was a great shame.

I really hope the Lost team have the whole thing mapped out, and they're allowed to finish it at the right time.

they said they hope for 5 seasons, we are halfway through season 3. so we have 2.5 seasons left. i am sure they will start to wrap up things next year getting ready for the finale in season 5.

They have also talked about a movie which concerns me a little.  I don't want to have to wait for a movie to get answers.

my guess would be that the movie would be like the lost experience and be for die hard fans.  it would probably be made so that ANYONE could watch it, but will tie up loose ends that us die hard losties have.

I dont get the movie part. Doesnt make sense financially to release it in theaters. Only lost fans would go see it unless they recapped the whole series in it (which would make it extremely long.) So i think it would be a tv movie, which doesnt make anymore sense because the two hour finales for seasons are like movies. Unless they do a two hour series finale with no commercials. Or limited commercials. That would be awesome.
