I had read that one of Juliet's areas of research was single sex-type reproduction.  My guess is that Rachel was able to produce a fertilized egg through hormonal modifications of some sort.

OHHHH I am angry now. The development of the plots in this episode was so poor that raised a lot of useless questions.

I agree!  You didn't know you needed to study up before the episode aired, huh?  lol

But I wouldn't call the questions completely useless.  It's good to think through it all together.  :)
