I think this same question was posed in another thread in another episode's subforum...  and demra or someone posted a lot of info on polar bears' natural habits also there... in nature, they are excellent swimmers and can swim for miles on a regular basis.  I guess they had to be originally transported on rafts?  But maybe the speculation is that they swam out from the Hydra island to the main island?

Which begs the question... for me... why wouldn't Sawyer at least TRY and swim the distance to the main island, after Kate opened the door?  To save his life, I would have thought he wouldn't give up (or he could hide somewhere).  It didn't look more than a mile the way they shot the scenes.  Better that then wait in your cage for someone to come by and shoot you, as Pickett was suggesting he was going to do.

in an ABC podcast, TPTB stated that the polar bears escaped during the collapse of Dharma.  Any theories that jive with this info??

I agree it looked kinda close.  Although I don't think we really know the magnitude of the Losties Island.  I think it may be ALOT bigger than we originally thought.  It may have been two miles, but I think a fit guy like Sawyer could handle a two mile swim.

P.S. I'm kinda a newbie.  What does TPTB mean?

that would be my guess also  they swam across after the collapse of Dharma

i was watching a special on bears and  apparently they can smell what is inside a canned food item
there is enough of the scent left on the outside of the can for them so tell what is inside
and polar bears have an even keener sense of smell then other bears so sniffing out some food on an island 2 miles away doesn't seem like a a stretch to me

ive spent time in the pacific islands between australia and papua new guinea, no matter how still the water is near between those two islands, tidal movement would sweep you right away, it wouldnt just be the swim it would be the drifting for hours trying to make headway across the current..

oh yeah of course, im talking about humans, animals dont have the disadvantage of seeing death coming, so they swim for much longer without losing heart.. added to the fact that polar bears can cross the english channel from what it sounds like..

nobody has mentioned yet.. but these bears have been kept in very small cages, most likely more than 1 in each cage because they have to work together to get the biscuits.. and so all this time in an unnatural environment even in a jungle never mind a tiny cage.. surely their natural instincts would be psychologically affected and they would more likely keep trying for biscuits rather than go looking for other food.. never mind swimming in the warm (not icy) water..

I cant see a polar bear hunting boar either... ive seen some documentaries and most of the time i see them hunt for seals.. waiting at small breathing holes in the ice for ages just waiting for a seal to pop its head up!

also.. what about the sharks?... a polar bear would be a supersize meal for them... or maybe they could fight it out?? Dharma Sharks VS Dharma Polar Bears??

BTW humans can cross the english channel too... only last year some english comedian did it for charity..

Bears swimming in shark-infested waters.  Hmmmm....  My money is on the sharks.  A shark could pull a bear under water and drown it.  Mammals are at a disadvantage in water.

Are we forgetting there is probably a tunnel?  The Others got over there somehow to bring J,K, and S there, and from how Ben acted  when they found Desdmond's boat they didn't have a boat as that point because they gave their little tug away.  Just a thought.
