Eko is monster mash
Updated 11/2/2006 11:10 AM ET
By William Keck, USA TODAY
Last season, Lost's Mr. Eko (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) looked the island's mystical monster straight in the eye and lived to tell about it. Last night on the ABC drama, Eko wasn't so lucky — the monster killed him.

With Eko's death, just one tail-section passenger is still around: Sam Anderson's Bernard. Last season, Michelle Rodriguez's Ana-Lucia and Cynthia Watros' Libby were shot by Michael (Harold Perrineau). With the departures of Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Perrineau and Malcolm David Kelley (Walt), there are no series regulars who are black.

Akinnuoye-Agbaje asked to be written off the series. After losing both parents last year, he wanted to return to his London home and work on a film he'll direct.

Elizabeth Mitchell, who plays Juliet, got to know him off the set. "We got along really well," she says. "He's about to direct his first movie about his life, which is an incredible story. He'll be missed."

Sad, but at least he asked for it. He was one of the better characters on the show.

The article said "series regular." I would hardly consider Rose a regular.

Keck throwing down the race card is ridiculous.  Race has nothing to do with this.

Looking forward to this thread lasting for weeks as to wether "lost" is a racist show... Hell we already have a gay thread... why not drop the racist card too... most articles use key words to incite viewpoints and debates... racial discrepancies of who gets paid what will probably turn up next... mr eko wanted to be paid as much as the white boy, but the show decided to bump him off instead... funny i never knew or saw that the trend of offing the coloreds was an issue till someone brought it up... may be because my sheet was pulled over my eyes... huh?

R.I.P Mr Eko.
One of the greatest characters on LOST, and definatly the best from the tail section. He will be missed.
I have nothing more to say

OMG Oz, you had me rolling!!! I am not racist but you are pretty blunt in your comments. Interesting.

Anyhoo, I don't think it's a race issue here. I think that everyone is paid accordingly and that the characters have just ran their course...well, maybe not Anna LuLu but she was a drunk lol (Just teasing)

I agree that sometimes certain words are used to start debates. Let's not do that, k? lol

Still, I didn't liked it. They could write him off ALIVE. There is dozens of ways to get rid of Eko without killing him. I think it's either very selfish of Adewale, or dumb on the writers. I can't believe Adewale demand to be cut once and for all in a series that is planned to last another 3.75 seasons.

Smokey turned into Locke. That gave him the power of being always right. Hence he is the good one, winner of game and everything else for now on.

I don't think it's selfish at all.  The man wants to spend more time with his family.  It's selfish of viewers to think that he should deny himself more time with his family and his professional goals to do this show.

He didn't ask after the fact, it was something he had planned before he signed on. And losing both parents in a year is hard...I can understand him leaving at the time when he did.

But leaving FOR GOOD? I never said that he hadn't the right, in fact I think he had the obligation to leave the series FOR NOW. But as I said there is 3.75 seasons ahead. There is a LOT of time to Adewale fulfill his tasks, and to return with a great character that will be missed.

I just got my new TVGuide for Nov. 13-19 and it has a nice article on page 16 called "The Story Behind Mr. Eko's Death."

The story we all heard is the official version.  The other story is
that he was quite a prima donna on the set.  He had "become an increasingly difficult presence on set, refusing to film scenes as scripted, insisting on rewrites" and saying he wanted out of his contract even before his parents' deaths.  Other cast members complained to producers when he voiced his opinions on where their characters' story lines should go.
I suggest listening to this week's 'Official' ABC Podcast for thoughts on Eko's departure via TPTB themselves. I prefer their thoughts / facts on the matter.  I can paraphrase if anyone would like...

I thought it was interesting to learn that carving the Scriptures on the Jesus stick was his idea as was his character's name.
