Far Too Many Unresolved Mysteries
« on: October 26, 2006, 10:21:57 PM »
Many mysteries that once aroused curiosity are now arousing frustration. Once a mystery is introduced, it should be resolved within a season or two, otherwise it is just being drawn out. This show is a drama, not a mystery. The climax is not discovering the secret; it is dealing with the situation once the secret is known. By now, we should not be thinking, "What is the smoke monster?"; we should be thinking, "What are we going to do about it?"

I'd like you to contribute to a list of all the mysteries, big and small, that have not been resolved.

* The smoke monster -- who, what, where, when, why, and how?
* Adam and Eve at the caves -- who were they?
* How did the passengers of 815 survive the crash? According to Sayid, they shouldn't have.

I think that a cause of a lot of frustrations is that this show is unique. You can't exaclt call it a mystery, and you can't just label it as a drama, or a sci-fi, or a survival story.

Sure, we have secrets. These secrets add to the story, however, and keep dedicated fans coming back for more.

I have a feeling that your three questions are going to be answered in the season to come. We are getting to the midpoint in the series, Season 3 out of a hopeful 5. This should be the most action-packed season yet, and it should give us a few answers. However, in giving us these answers, it will leave more in its wake, keeping us attached for the next season and the one after that.

Let's face it: Do you REALLY want all your questions answered right now? I don't. I want to be able to come back next week and think "Oh, so that's what THAT meant," not be sitting thinking "Ok, why am I watching this show again?" If I was watching tV just for the sake of TV, I might as well go watch Desperate Housewives. I watch LOST because it IS a mystery show. It shows a little light at the end of a tunnel, and that light then turns out to be a train! Unexpected occurences can only happen if we don't know what's going to happen.

However, in the spirit of the thread, there are quite a few questions that have been raised recently. If you look in the thread for Epi 3x04, there is a topic where people are complaining about this same thing (Has Complaints in the title). A lot of mysteries from S3 are posted there.

Whatever you call it, it's starting to try the patience of many viewers.

I agree. But those secrets should last for about one season -- two at most. Whenever a secret is revealed, it should be replaced by a different secret or by a twist of everything we thought we knew. Lost has certainly been adding new secrets, but they have not been answering the older ones. By the time they are finally answered, people will have forgotten what it was they were curious about.

All? Absolutely not. But dozens of questions going all the way back the beginning of the first season is pushing it.

There, they are complaining about more questions introduced in season 3. That's not what I'm talking about. As I said above, new questions should come up, but they should be replacing the old questions. That's not what's happening. The old questions are still being dangled to the point that they are starting to be forgotten. The whispers, the sickness, even Cindy disappearing are only a few that people hardly remember. The curiosity for these and others is mostly gone, and that will make the answer less satisfying.

Do you think LOST will only last for 5 seasons??? I hope it's longer, I'm going to morn the the day LOST ends.

But to the subject I think this show (not the subject matter, but the idea of it) is really kind of true to life. How many things happen in your life that you don't understand until years later. Its true these things in our own lives aren't as obvious as they are on LOST, but lets face it, its a TV show. If they start answering questions, even if they are from season one, the show is going to have to end a lot sooner than any of us would like. And as long as we have unanswered questions from every season, we have something to talk about on this site!

If you are right than Adam and Eve would just be a cute tidbit and not add anything to the story. That would be disappointing. I want them to be Ben's parents, that would add to the history of the island.

And I agree with JB, this is very much a mystery show, mystery and drama. A mama, or a drystery.

Top list guys, if you piece it all together we are getting quite an understanding of the island and what is going on.
We also know that Sayid was a Republican Guard, specialising in interrogation and commnications.
That Danielle/Sayid have more than one map.
Also that Locke still doesnt have feeling in his legs, he can walk on the island but physically he is still paralysed.

Feellikeanut, I know this is not the way you intended your thread to go... I apologize for turning it on it's head... that's why I referred you to Gaining Focus... I know that I listed a ton of questions that I feel have not been answered and I share your frustration... because I love lost so much I have to divert my energy from frustration to being infatuated again... so I tend to look for the silver lining..  hope you understand and hope you know you are not alone with your concerns!

Daisyrain I am not sure about the Locke and is paralysed still idea. He did not feel the pain when he got hurt with boone and the hatch. At that time he was having trouble again. But Locke sure felt the pain when his legs were under the blast door and he felt that pain for a while. So he has feeling in his legs and I think he is completely healed.

Need to know how he ended up in the wheel chair to help answer some of this.

I agree that Locke has feeling in his legs. That part where he couldn't feel anything was just during that plane-kills-Boone scene. I also don't believe that he is completely cured for the same reason. His legs gave out on him that time. I think he's cured while on the island, but will it last off the island? And that goes for Rose too. Will she still be cured off the island?

this part of the story with the island healing people messes me up...

it leads me to believe that the people themselves are imagining themselves healed... I know it's out there, but when Locke doubts himself he losses use of his legs, as long as he's focused on being the hunter-strong-man-can-do-anything person he's fine... I believe there is something about how a person thinks and the island... the island is attuned to the thoughts and acts accordingly...

it's not a well thought out idea but I hope you get the gist of what I'm trying to say...
