this is my solution:
in this season Hugo's friend is Dave.
from last year hunts we know this page http://profiles.yahoo.com/samtoomey and the link to CrazyLenny http://lost.cubit.net/lenny/crazyLenny.php.
so the new link is http://lost.cubit.net/dave/crazyDave.php
ask Dave about Pearl and he answers: Dude, the system failed. You just need to know the timecode. That's final.
i submitted the time code of the first system failure (when the plain crashes) as written in the Pearl log printout: 922044:16.
i hope this is all right

Hi Guys..  New here, thanks to Pandora's recommendation.  Sledge, very nice work on this.  I have been following VM's game on OWA and wish I had been here for season one also.  Great puzzles.


As far as Hunt 1,  the system failure time, of course!   DOH.  I kept thinking the CD circled on the page would come into play, so I was thinking along the lines of Roman numerals.  Nice job to those who got it.

My first post!  I used the CD hint on the crossword puzzle to figure out that I needed to change Crazy Lenny (CL, which was crossed out) to Crazy Dave (CD, which was circled) in the URL.  Good hunt!

you see, the first thing I noticed was the CL CD! took me a day to figure that out though!

i knew that sledge incorporates pieces of the show into the hunt so i figured that as soon as i saw crossword, that one of the word's were wrong...

i did a google search for fossil resin, but pearl was not one of the options that i could find... like Kauri...

but congrats to those who solved it... mitch good first hunt!

OLLY: No, I mean I think AMBER was the wrong clue... as in, yes, it is a fossil resin, but that clue AND answer shouldn't have been there.  They were both inserted into a crossword where that entry should not have been there, and don't allow other correct entries to fit (also #18 is circled to the left).  Instead, the clue should have been like "Oyster's prize" or something along those lines.  If you look at the other crossword link Sledge gives... for Locke's crossword puzzle, that is how GILGAMESH is portrayed... it is Enkinu's friend, but it doesn't fit with the other clues that are up there.  Unfortunately, I didn't wait for the second hint....

BTW, I think solving the entire crossword did have some benefits (and I just like crosswords in general, I guess).  It was not until I got 7 down... STAMP OF APPROVAL... that I was able to see that LETUP was the correct answer, and I had the A for PEARL.  And I wasn't able to get STAMP OF APPROVAL until I got a bunch of the lower clues right.  What I ended up doing was printing out the picture image, whiting out the top clues Sledge already had, and starting over from scratch.  It was much easier from that point on...

PS:  I think the answer to 8 down "Hugo's" is EURO.  I'm not sure why this is, but it makes sense with everything else on the crossword.  I was curious if someone else can explain the term "Hugo's Euro".

Wow, that is clever... if there was a second step.  Great job if that is the answer.  I kinda hope it is, because that will mean that even with the second hint, I would have been wrong with my answer as PEARL... and I won't feel so bad about misreading the rules. :)  This goes to show, I really need to review last year's clues more carefully...

Hugo's part of the puzzle for us to solve.  That wasn't the original 8 down.  8 is one of the numbers.  Put the crossword clues from 4 8 15 16 23 42 togethers - what do you get?

Dirty:  I'd have to disagree, because I think the Hugo's one was one of the right answers.  Youcan't really put the numbers together because some are across and some are down, and some are both.  I still think it's PEARL, but we'll see soon enough...

with the other ones in that block, what I got was, starting with 5 down:

Look again. None of THE NUMBERS are used twice. They are either down, or across, but not both. I would follow the advice and see what you get.

It is actually VP191b (bad handwriting, I know). This wasn't related to THE HUNT, but is the model number of an LCD monitor I was considering purchasing. (I went with the VP930P instead - which is also written on that same sticky). The notepade underneath the crossword puzzle is totally unrelated to THE HUNT. It is my notes on the raw footage for the commercials I'm now editing. Basically, it is a list of TAKES (1, 2, 3, ... etc) with a grade (A, B+, C-, etc) and some notes. The best takes are circled. It just so happens that 18 was circled (I didn't even realize this until AstroJones pointed it out to me).

As noted in the instructions, not ALL the information given to you is intended to be used in solving THE HUNT. That's part of the challenge! Figuring out what information to use, and what to dismiss.

But I'm confused, now that I know to look at 4 8 15 16 23 42.. this is what I get:

Put the CLUES together, ignore the answers (the answers are right, but the clues don't fit - what do the clues have in common?).
