i love to cook. i cook everything and anything, mostly traditional "southern" foods. but, my husband says i'm turning into a hippie. i want to grow/raise everything we eat. i keep reading about hormones, pesticides, and everything else bad for us that we are putting into our bodies, and it worries me, especially for our children. then on the other hand, i sure like eating out, and don't know that i will ever be able to kill a chicken!!

1. Hormones usually are not a big deal. There is usually enough species separation so that say sheep hormones are not active within the human body. Different receptor structures won't allow hormones from one species to activate the receptors in another species. Also, if the hormone is a protein then when it hits your stomach it is digested like any other protein anyway. One of my pet peeves is GNC. They sell a lot of crap that's advertised to do this or do that, but in reality if it is protein based, the stomach rather quickly breaks it apart so that the intestines can absorb the amino acids that all proteins are made from. GNC is SATAN!!! 2. Pesticides are a problem. I either buy locally grown or organic veggies. I too am going to start growing my own also.... veggies that is.

i understand hormones, but if you eat chicken breast every day, or say 5 times a week, and all those chickens are fed feed with hormones to increase the size of their breasts (i know, i know, why can't they do this for humans) won't that effect the humans who eat the breast? you mentions sheep hormones, but what about other animals? i mention chicken because poultry production for commercial use here is HUGE, i have seen the chickens that get produced in some of those houses, they are not normal, they are not healthy.

I can't think of a chicken hormone that would affect humans. Maybe melatonin or insulin, but they are both proteins and would be deactivated in the stomach (due to both the low pH and the presence of the protein digesting hormone pepsin). Growth hormone is also a peptide hormone, which is why GH injections work much better than GH pills ( http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/hgh.html) I don't worry too much about giving animals hormones to make them bigger and/or to produce more meat. Chicken hormones are even less effective on humans than sheep hormones. Chickens are much farther removed from humans on the evolutionary timeline than cloven-hooved animals. Thus their hormones are even more structurally different than those of more closely related animals.

thanks goober!! we raise our own beef, and our inlaws raise pigs, so both of those are covered, the only meat i buy is chicken. i have my own garden, this is my first, i've always bummed off my mother who has more than she can eat. i think i may even take my hand at canning/preserving this year, it just depends on if i have time. we live on 320 acres, plus have another 300 and another 80. we have cattle and horses in all those places and i love it! we live right in the middle of the 320, so we have NO neighbors, but are only 7 minutes from an interstate. it is truly a great location. i think next year i will grow more than this year, my garden this year is just over 700 sq ft. okay, i think i've hijacked this thread enough. as far as recipes go, on of the best websites to find ANYTHING is: http://www.recipezaar.com/. you can do a search of ingredients, and it tells you what to make with it. they are user submitted, and you can review any recipes you use.

I never get to worked up over those things like hormones. I never watch those reports on shows like 20/20 or 60 minutes. I would rather be ignorant and enjoy my food. It may get me in the long run, but I am happy now.
Seafood, pizza and chicken. Any of those are involved and I will love.
