It appears the book points to a 'reality' that is not what it seems.  That quick synopsis is probably not enough to get the tone of the book.

For the person-bicycle transferrance - could this be a hint to the fact that the 'others' have completely blurred the line at this point between their experiments and their personalities?

There is also the search for the black box, echoing the black\white and search themes.

is there any significance to the fact that the main character has been dead the majority of the book?

I saw it as a plot device by the author. The producers stated in one of their podcasts that this is not purgatory, so I don't think the losties are dead.
