Can someone explain to me who David is/was. Why was he in the flash sideways? Why did Locke tell him he didn't have a son?

David was what Jack wanted.  He wanted a son he could  have a relationship with and so he created/had one in the alt universe.  But there never was a son.  Or a marriage to Juliet.

Christian said they all created this place (sideways timeline) for a place to meet and move on. I think what we saw for most of the characters is what they would have wanted in their "real" lives. Jack: a son and a good relationship with him. This is what Jack wanted but never had. I think Locke was just trying to help Jack with his awakening.

that to me was the sadest part of the ending. that he didn't have a son. it's one thing to say, hey you were never really a cop, but to make up a whole person,.... that was disturbing.

I don't know, from my point of view, Jack deserved happiness after his good life; if having a son and that afterlife constituted happiness for Jack, he deserved that while he was in his holding pattern, waiting to meet back up with the other losties and to "move on."

The explanation makes sense for some, but not for all.

Why would Locke choose to be in the wheelchair in his "happy" version of life, with his father an invalid from the crash he caused?  Why would Sun choose to be shot and for her father to disapprove of her relationship with Jin, rather than imagining a happy marriage?  Why wouldn't Sayid imagine himself with Nadia, instead of having her with his louse of a brother setting him off on a killing spree?  Kate's still on the run.  Claire is still in a predicament.

To me David is still MIB.
When Desmond made him human he was finally able to die and leave the island.
And he created a home for himself where the island was deep in the ocean and
he had a family and home.

OH MY GOD. STOP. DAVID IS NOBODY. HE DIDN'T EXIST. HE WAS CONSTRUCTED BY JACK TO REDEEM HIMSELF BY BEING A GOOD FATHER LIKE HIS NEVER WAS.

:BREATH::

Hence the reason for right at the start of the flash sideways, he's kind of aloof about it. Then suddenly becomes super awesome dad.

Deleted scene on DVDs

Jack returns to the group after talking to his father. Everyone is smiling and hugging. Jack looks down and there is David.
Jack says "Thanks for helping me let go."
David looks up and says "thanks for helping me go home."
