my guess is that he can take the form of anyone that dies on the island, but if he broke the rules (or bent them hard), he cant take their form and then change again. Kinda like how he said it took him forever to carry out his plan to kill Jacob. Something he did was semi-illegal in island rules and he thought it was a loophole. It apparently wasnt a loophole. He broke the rules. Now he is stuck.

We've thought for a while that he could only change into the dead that weren't buried.

Could it be as simple as, he's "Locke" right now and now we've buried the real Locke, he's locked in to Locke now.

This is my thoughts during the show EXACTLY. The look on Ilana's face seemed to say "well, after we bury this man, he cant change anymore..."

I would guess that have to do with the ability to see White Ghost Walt just as James do. He got that new ability at the expense to lose the identity changing one, because he used a candidate body.

Do you think this means we won't be seeing Christian anymore?

He can still change into Smokey, as we saw and heard him traveling across the landscape (from his own perspective) on the way to Dharmaville.  So apparently he just can't take another human's form, just Locke.

Is it that he cannot change out of a body that is buried / burned / destroyed, or that there are no other bodies on the island to change into?  If he cannot kill candidates and all the others are in the temple, there may not be any more "bodies" for him to kill and take over...

It was Sun's idea to bury Locke though.  Iliana was just going to leave him lying there by the statue.

Someone just brought that up with me here at work.

Why wouldn't they just have buried him once they figured out Locke wasn't Locke anymore...

I think it has something to do with the fact that Smokey taking Locke's form is the only time we have seen on the show that Smokey has taken the form of a dead person, and the dead body did not disappear. THIS I believe has something to do with Locke turning the wheel at the bottom of the cave and leaving the island, while simulateously coming back to the island as a dead body. It seems that Locke has been the only actual person to have been in two places at the same time, and I think this will also play into the loop hole that MIB used to kill Jacob.

Ilana made her comment that UnLocke couldn't change his face before they had actually buried Locke's body, so that's not the reason.

I think it's because Jacob is dead and now he's stuck with this form.

Not sure it is important, but it struck me as strange that Ilana is all for burying locke, but no mention is made of burying her "partners" who smokey/locke killed (Bram etc).

Was it Illana that said to bury him?? I may have missed that line of dialogue.
