As a Multimedia Experience
One of the more unique aspects of the show is that in addition to weekly TV episodes (and occasional recap or clip specials), Lost also reaches out to give additional information to its fans through other official media.
Two of the Lost writers, Damon Lindelof & Carlton Cuse, run a weekly official podcast that is downloadable from iTunes. There are cast interviews and fan mail is sometimes answered, though the spoilers are usually not Earth-shattering. This mp3/iPod-friendly format was extended when ABC began offering Lost episodes for download off of iTunes for a nominal fee.
In 2005, ABC sponsored an official website for promotion of the show, OceanicAirlines.com. They also ran the official ABC diary, though some of the accuracy of the latter as Lost 'canon' has been called into question, because of many date and plot inconsistencies.
In 2006, ABC sponsored a complex "Alternate Reality Game" called The Lost Experience, which sought to tie in elements from official online sites more cohesively to the story of the TV show. It ran during the summer hiatus, from May to September of 2006, and even included some references from 'official' spinoff books, such as Bad Twin. It filled in more of the "backstory" behind some of the mysteries of Lost, and producers touted it as revealing some spoilers for Season 3.
Lost continues to seek new forms of interaction with fans. Writers and cast show up annually at Comic Con (San Diego) to communicate new ideas, such as the release of "Lost Video Diaries" (short television clips that will be shot by the survivor characters that find a videocamera) in Season 3. Even products such as the Lost jigsaw puzzles (which have glow-in-the-dark notations on the back) claim to provide spoilerish information for fans that seek more.
