Alvar & Magnus Hanso

Alvar Hanso is the founder of The Hanso Foundation (THF).  However, he was not at the helm running the organization for some time, due to a health condition (not fully explained, but may have to do with experimental treatments for life extension).  He originally had good intentions, but let things get out of hand by handing over the reins of the organization to THF president, Thomas Werner Mittelwerk, who wanted to use THF to further his own evil plans.

Alvar Hanso's grandfather was Magnus Hanso.  Magnus was a Danish merchant who ended up trading slaves in the 1800s.  The Black Rock, one of his slave ships originating from Portsmouth, England, was the most infamous of these ships.  It was supposedly shipwrecked, never heard from again, and lost to history.  His company was later sold to the East Ocean Trading Company, which became Allied Coppenhagen Marine Merchants, which in turn maintained ties with The Hanso Foundation (founded by his grandson, Alvar).

Alvar Hanso is seen speaking on the Sri Lanka orientation video, and introduces many important ties of the DHARMA Initiative with other elements from Lost.

Little is known about Alvar's personal life, as he is reputed to be a relative recluse, only seen in public when he addressed the U.N.  Rachel Blake, a young lady who is the heroine of the story, suspected she had a connection with him since she traced her educational funding to his foundation.  As she dug up evidence of the THF's unsavory activities, she realized Hanso himself was missing, and tried to find him.

She finally tracks him down in Norway, and he discusses his regret over the situation.  Hanso said that it was because he was held near-prisoner in his home by his health issues, and let Mittelwerk get away with too much.  Alvar then reveals to her what she suspected: that he is her father.  Alvar was imprisoned after the police investigated and raided THF, but exonerated due to the efforts of Rachel.
