The Tailies
After the rafters are attacked at night on the open waters at the end of Season 1, they are left for dead. Sawyer pulls Michael onto a piece of the raft, and revives him, but Jin is nowhere to be found.
The next morning, Sawyer and Michael make it back to the island. When they get to land, they see Jin running at them with his hands tied up, screaming "OTHERS!" A group of people in tattered clothing with primitive makeshift weapons are chasing after Jin and capture the three rafters. The captives are thrown into a pit. After some time, the cage is opened and a woman is thrown into the pit with them - it is Ana-Lucia who we met at the end of Season 1. She was in the tail of the plane, and tells the Sawyer, Michael and Jin that she survived the crash and was captured by these people as well. Sawyer then reveals that he has a gun, and that he is going to use it the next time someone comes back to the pit. Before he realizes what is happening, Ana takes the gun from him and shouts, "Coming up!"
As it turns out, this group wasn't The Others, but were actually all survivors from the tail section of the plane. Ana-Lucia went into the pit undercover in order to find out exactly who these three men were. Once everyone realizes they are all "good guys", the rafters are let out of the pit and taken to the Tailies camp.
In the seventh episode of Season 2, "The Other 48 Days", we got to see what the Tailies were going through during the first 48 days on the island during the same time events in Season 1 were playing out for the Fusies. Twenty-three Tailies survived the crash, but the first night on the island, they were attacked by The Others. Mr. Eko managed to kill two of the attackers, but all the children were taken. A couple of weeks later, they were attacked again, this time Ana killed one of the attackers, but nine more Tailies were taken. Ana found a list of the nine people taken on the dead body, as well as an old US Army knife. At this time, Ana begins to suspect there is a mole in the group. Ana later transfers that suspicion on a man named Nathan, because he was gone for two hours by himself, and she couldn't remember him on the plane. Suspecting he is a mole, Ana digs a pit and throws Nathan in it (this is the same pit the rafters are later thrown into). Another man in the group, Goodwin, kills Nathan and hides his body - because he realizes Ana is going to torture him, and that when he doesn't confess, Ana is going to start to suspect others. That's when we realize that Goodwin is really an Other, similar to how Ethan infiltrated the Fusies group in Season 1.
When Nathan is found missing, Ana decides to relocate the group. They find an abandoned bunker (Arrow Station) and make it their base. Inside they bunker they find a chest containing a Holy Bible, a blanket, a glass eye, and a radio. Ana and Goodwin hike to higher ground to try the radio, and that is when Ana confronts Goodwin. She has pieced everything together and remembers that Goodwin was completely dry that first day and showed up on the beach several minutes after the crash. Goodwin tells her that they only take the "good" people, and that the children are safe. The two engage in a short fight, and Goodwin ends up dead.
A while later is when the raft group arrived. Once the groups join together, they decide to hike to the other side of the island to the Fusies' camp so everyone can be together. During their trek, Cindy, a flight attendant, is taken and the group hears whispers in the jungle. In a panic, they begin to run. Ana-Lucia, still running and scared, is startled when she comes across Shannon in the jungle. In a moment of terror and fear, Ana shoots Shannon. This causes some friction between the two groups, obviously, but they are able to join together regardless.
When the Tailies make it to the Fusies' camp, there are only 4 left: Ana-Lucia, Mr. Eko, Bernard (Rose's husband), and Libby.
