5x12_smokey_lair_1.jpgWhen Ben first enters Smokey's Lair, or the Temple catacombs, there are lots and lots of hieroglyphics and other Egyptian looking statues and such in the room. Follow the jump for a series of images of what Ben saw.

5x12_smokey_2.jpgUnlike Eko, who felt no shame for his sins, Ben weeps at his mistake in causing Alex's death. Makes one wonder just what the Pilot's sins were for the killin' he got. Anyway, for those interested there are 49 holes in the "smokey grate." Anyone wanna bet holes 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, and 42 are important? Check out the video after the jump to rewatch the judgement.

5x12_anubis_smokey.jpgWhen we saw the back of the statue a few weeks ago, it looked a lot like the Egyptian God of the Underworld, Anubis, but there were quite a few naysayers out there. I'm sure that even after another appearance by Anubis in tonight's episode, we'll still have those naysayers, and that's fine. Tonight, while Ben was in the Temple catacombs we got a glimpse of some drawings on the wall. Pictured above appears to be Anubis with Smokey in front of him. You could probably even say that on the left side that could be the donkey wheel. Also an Ankh and some snakes and some other random stuff. Let us know what your thoughts on this are after the jump.

5x05_temple_02.jpgWe also got our first look at the mysterious Temple we've heard so much about in tonight's episode. We learn that the temple (which is where Montaun lost his arm) has similar looking Glyphs on the side of it as what was used on the countdown timer in the Swan Station (the hatch). This seems a little odd when you consider that the Temple is supposedly an ancient building that predates the Dharma Initiative, and the Swan Station was built in the 70s/80s. It is also possible speculation at this point that the Temple may be Smokey's home. I base this mostly on the connection with Ben, who seemed to be able to call Smokey to the slaughter last season, and also is the one who sent his people to the Temple for safety. Ben has referred to the Temple as "the last safe place on the island."

5x05_smokey_01.jpgSmokey made his first full-fledged appearance in season 5 tonight, showing himself to Rousseau's team. First, poor Nadine disappears, and then when they look for her Smokey blows up some trees (ahh, just like old times) and grabs Montan. But what's more important is that we learn that Montan lost his arm while getting pulled down into a smokey hole. We also learn that what Danielle called the sickness was in regard to Smokey, and whatever he did to the rest of the team that went into the tunnel to rescue Montan. Anyone think Dr. Chang lost his arm in a similar accident?

3x20: Smokey and the ChairIn "3x20", "The Main Behind the Curtain", we finally meet Jacob in a run down shack. Before we catch a glimpse of him, he is invisible. Or is he? On first watch, I thought I spotted Smokey in the chair, but on second watch, dismissed it as a shadow from the bulb of the flashlight. Other viewers have also reported seeing smokey, and on further review, none of the other flashlight shots have a dark center. So, what is going on here? Is smokey present, or is this just a shadow? You can decide.

3x15: Smokey as CerberusSmokey returns in Episode 3x15, "Left Behind". This time, Smokey is chasing after Kate and Juliet. In an encounter with the two, Smokey does something we really haven't seen to date. He flashes bright lights in Juliet's face. This seems different than the scanning we saw with Eko.

Also, when Smokey appears at the fence, we see Smokey emerge from several pieces that join together to form one big smokey. When Smokey runs away, he appears to break into two pieces.

Interestingly, as Smokey approaches the fence, there are three large "heads" that are very noticeable. Could this be confirmation that Smokey is indeed the "Cerberus" mentioned on the Blast Door Map? Is it possible that Smokey is comprised of three separate entities that are capable of joining together, or working independently. Could this explain why sometimes we hear the clackety-clak noises of a roller coaster when Smokey appears, and sometimes we don't?

What do you think?

3x05: Smokey the MonsterIn 3x5, we got another good look at the monster. This encounter seems to prove at least two theories: 1) Smokey IS the monster that has been uprooting trees and all. We saw that Smokey can lift a person over the trees, which would explain how the pilot ended up dead, hanging high up in a tree. 2) Smokey can take the form of humans - this may still be up for debate, but it was certainly implied that Yemi's appearance was related to the appearance of Smokey the Island Monster. This may explain all the "ghosts" on the island: Christian Shephard, Yemi, Boone, etc.

The mechanical sounds and "groaning" sounds could also be heard again with this appearance, which seems to indicate that somehow parts of the security system are mechanical.

1x01: Black Smoke Monster Did NOT Cause the Turbine ExplosionIn the first chaotic scenes of the pilot, there is a wisp of smokey material that swoops down over the turbine, shortly before it explodes. Many people believe that this may be a manifestation of 'Smokey', the Monster seen later. However, in the official podcast, Damon Lindelof says that the Smoke Monster did NOT appear in the pilot episode physically. This wisp of smoke was likely just a by-product of poor CGI graphic FX, meant to depict flying wreckage debris.
